"I'm sorry... We did everything we could, but..."
The doctor's voice faltered, weighed down by the gravity of his next words. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for what he had to say next.
"He didn't make it."
The sterile, white walls of the hospital room seemed to close in on them, suffocating in their coldness. The doctor's words hung in the air like a cruel echo, sending the world of the couple standing before him crashing down.
The mother, a woman in her mid-thirties with tear-streaked cheeks, stood frozen, her legs trembling beneath her. Her husband's arm was around her, trying to support her, but he too was barely keeping it together. His face was pale, and his own eyes were glassy with shock.
"No... no, please..."
The mother whimpered, her voice cracking.
She shook her head in disbelief as if refusing to let the words sink in. Her lips quivered uncontrollably as a sob escaped her throat.
