The weeks after Rosaline’s departure seemed to drag on, but amidst the emptiness, Gerald found solace in their continued connection. Despite the physical distance, Rosaline made an effort to send him messages filled with warmth and reassurance. Her words, though typed from miles away, gave him strength during moments of doubt.

"How’s your day?"
"Thinking about you today."
"You’ve got this, Gerald. I believe in you."

Each notification that lit up his phone was like a beacon, cutting through the fog of uncertainty. Gerald found himself waiting for her messages, even if they were brief. They reminded him that she hadn’t forgotten him, that their bond was still there, even if the miles stretched between them. But as much as her messages lifted him, they also made him realize how much he missed the little things—the sound of her voice, the way she laughed at his jokes, or the way she looked at him during quiet moments.

One evening, as Gerald sat alone in his apartment, another message came through. It was a long one this time, filled with updates on her life in Europe—her new friends, the projects she was working on, the places she had explored. It was clear that Rosaline was thriving, immersing herself fully in this new chapter of her life. Gerald was happy for her, but there was a twinge of sadness too. He realized just how separate their lives had become.

"I wish you were here to see this place, Gerald," the message read.
"It’s beautiful, but it’s not the same without you."

A faint smile tugged at his lips as he read her words. Despite the distance and her busy life, she still thought of him. That mattered more than anything. He knew how hard it was for both of them—trying to maintain a connection across time zones, balancing their separate lives while holding on to what they had.

Gerald tapped out a reply, trying to be as supportive as Rosaline had been.
"I’m so proud of you, Rosaline. I knew you’d make the most of your time there. And I’m with you, even if it’s from a distance."

He hit send, hoping his words would reach her in the same way hers had reached him—offering comfort, even when they couldn’t physically be together. For a brief moment, the distance didn’t feel as vast, and the weight on his chest lifted slightly. This was their new reality, and though it wasn’t easy, they were figuring it out, one message at a time.

Later that night, as he lay in bed, Gerald received one final message from Rosaline before he drifted off to sleep:
"No matter where I go, Gerald, you’ll always have a place in my heart. I promise."

Those words stayed with him long after he read them. The uncertainty and doubt that had been looming over him began to fade, replaced by the quiet reassurance that they were both fighting for the same thing. They were apart for now, but Rosaline’s words filled him with hope—they weren’t apart in spirit. And that was enough to keep him going.
