I was going to break the alarm one of these days.

I swinged my hand over the annoying piece of metal and it fell to the ground with a loud bang.  I closed my eyes, turned around and went back to sleep.

-"Jeremy! Wake up!"

I groaned and buried my face into my pillow. Maybe if I pretend I'm dead, they'll leave me alone.

  No such luck.

-"Jeremy!" Michael's voice was sharper now, hitting that one tone that could wake up the dead. He was probably standing at the edge of my bed, waving his hands like he's responsible for my life or something. "Wake up we are gonna be late! It's the first day of school!"

-"Wonderful," I mumbled into the pillow, "Tell them I died in my sleep."

There's a pause, and then Josephine's voice cuts in, dry as ever. Brother and sister dearest, leave me alone. I hate being the youngest.

-"Great plan Jeremy. Great plan. Everyone's gonna believe you."

Michael started pacing around the room, like he was an anxiety machine. He was probably running through five different schedules in his head right now.

-"We have exactly twenty-four minutes before we're supposed to be at school. If we leave in four minutes, we can still be on time—!"

-"Michael, breathe." Josephine interrupted him and leaned against my doorframe with her usual I-don't-give-a-shit posture. She was already dressed, her curls perfect, like she was stepping on a magazine shoot instead of the first day of sophomore year. Meanwhile, I was a freshman, and I looked like a human pile of laundry.

-"Jere, for our brother's sake, get up, you are ruining Mike's perfectly crafted schedule." She added, smirking.

I crack an eye open and I see her over my head, holding a bottle. And I can tell, by the look on her face it's not for hydration. I sighed and sat up. "If you pour water on me, I'll ruin your hair."

She rolled her eyes. Michael checked his watch again, mumbling something about 'timing' and 'classes' like he's preparing to send us into battle.  "If we leave in three minutes we will—"

-"Michael," I interrupted , my voice annoyed and sleepy, "chill. It's the first day of school. No one's gonna care if we're late."

The idiot gasped, actually gasped, like I had suggested we burn the school down—Which hey, wasn't a bad idea. "No one's gonna care!? Jeremy, you have to make a good impression! Find your class, friends—"

-"He doesn't have any." Josephine said, "He fought with Asher, remember?"

Asher Kellen. Biggest fucker in the whole universe.

-"Don't bring him up please it's ruining my already fucked up mood." I looked at my sister.

I got up, the weigh of my existence crashing down on me. "Can I at least get dressed without an audience please?"

Michael didn't even hear me, he was busy pacing once again, "Jeremy if we don't leave on the next two minutes we're gonna be late—"

-"We will survive dude." Josephine said, rolling her eyes, "Stop stressing. They won't expel us on day one."

Josephine already left the room, and before Michael could go full mode mom on me, I slammed the door in his face.

It was just another year. You'll get through it Jeremy.

I dragged myself to the kitchen where my siblings were already eating breakfast.

Michael was busy packing some kind of protein bar into his ridiculously organised backpack, and Josephine was scrolling on her phone, holding it on the one hand, and a toast on the other.

-"Look who finally decided to join the land of the living," she glanced up at me.

I tugged at one of her curls and she smacked my hand. Hard. Damn.

-"Yeah I revived," I muttered and headed straight to the fridge.

-"Thankfully," she smirked, "I'd miss your sparkling personality."

I grabbed the milk carton and took a long swig straight from it.

-"JEREMY!" Michael yelled horrified, almost making me drop the freaking thing. "We all use that!"

Josephine just raised an eyebrow. "Honestly, if that's the most disgusting thing he does today, it'll be a miracle."

I shrugged. "You know, for someone who doesn't care about me, you have a lot to say."

"Yeah, but I care enough to annoy you." She said, hopping off the counter and grabbing her bag.

Michael shot me a look, like he was expecting me to make a disaster in the first day. I met his gaze and gave him a deadpanned look in return.

"What?" I said, already irritated.

-"Just..Try not to anything stupid." He said.

-"Boys! Come on!" Josephine called out, and we both went after her.

We stepped out of the house, the sun shining. I blinked multiple times to adjust my eyes to the sun.

Josephine walked a few paces ahead, her headphones in, bobbing her head to some music she'd kill me if I made fun off. Michael was pacing next to me, muttering something about avoiding being late. I don't know why he was stressing so much. No one was gonna care anyway.

And then, just up the street, I saw her.

Avery. With her older brother Kai,walking next to her, people looking at him. Because Kai was basically the biggest trouble maker in school.

-"Oh my god not him." Michael groaned and fixed his already perfect collar for the eleventh time. "Jeremy, stay away from Kai Anderson."

-"He used to be your friend though?" I said, and looked at Kai. I've known him my whole life.

-"Just— Don't."

I him a quick nod, and returned my attention to Avery. And then I quickly averted my eyes, staring down at the sidewalk like it had suddenly become the most interesting thing in the world. It's not like I haven't seen her. She's been in this neighbourhood forever. We literally used to be friends when we were kids.

She laughed at something Kai said, and I fought the urge to not look at her. I didn't look at her. Josephine noticed of course, because she's Josephine.

-"Wow, could you be any more obvious?" She mutters as we pass.

-"Shut up." I said under my breath, not looking at neither of them.

Avery didn't even glance my way. She was busy talking to her brother — still looking as pretty as ever, and she probably didn't even remember my existence. Which is fine. Totally fine.

Josephine smirked, but thankfully, she didn't say anything else.
