Little did we know...

I was already half asleep 5 minutes into the English class. It was the last one of the day and my teacher... Well, she thinks that every book we talk about is the most important thing and that it will shape our entire lives or something. In one word BORING.

"Miss Smith?"
Shit! Busted. Mrs Clark was standing right in front of me. I heard my twin sister, Olivia, snickering right next to me. I gave her a look that in Universal Glare Language means "shut up".
"I assume you are familiar with the book I told you to read for today?"
"Yes ma'am."
The class went silent. After a whole year everyone knew what was coming. One could think that Mrs. Clark would have stopped trying to beat us by then but she was determined to make me and Olivia philosophers of some sort.
"Then I'd like you to answer my question. What is Juliet without her Romeo?"
I looked her straight into the eyes.
"Alive."
The class burst out laughing.
"Miss Smith! How dare you speak to me that way!"
"FYI it's Smith Guttierrez."
"And," Olivia joined in "Emma's right. If Juliet hadn't met Romeo she wouldn't have stabbed herself. Besides, she was 14 and he was what? 20? I think I know a word for that and it starts with a P."
The class, who had just calmed down, started laughing again. Mrs Clark looked like she was going to hawk a hairball. Olivia just made her innocent face.
"Romeo and Juliet is the greatest love story of all time!" Mrs Clark said with anger in her voice.
"I've heard better. Seriously, outside of class, who reads that?" Olivia asked. Josh, Lexi and Matthew answered by shouting "NO ONE".
"Stewart, Torres, Jackson, Smith..."
"Smith GUTTIERREZ" both me and Olivia said at once even tho messing around when Mrs Clark starts with last names isn't the safest option.
"...do you want me to call your parents?"
Whoops. Olivia and I exchanged glances. Calling the parents was NOT an option. We had to step down and, for the first time since the beginning of high school, accept Mrs Clark's victory. It wasn't easy since I already had 10 comebacks prepared but when there's only one strategic option you do it.

At least she let me sleep through the rest of the class.
As soon as the bell rang I grabbed my backpack and burst out of the classroom.
"That was a close one," Olivia said when we got far enough.
"Do you think she was just bluffing?"
"Nah. She's done it before. Remember?"
"Yeah. I just thought that after that talk she wouldn't want to do it again."
We burst out laughing. What Mrs Clark didn't know before calling mom and dad was that we share a lot of similarities. Including being the teachers' worst nightmare.
Olivia flipped her long black hair.
"Yeaaa. Just like she wouldn't twist our last name after we corrected her for the first time a year ago. Or like she wouldn't ask us questions if she doesn't like our answers."
"Ok, you made your point. Now let's go. Our bus leaves in 5 minutes."

We got on the school bus and immediately secured our usual seat in the back. I got my Swiss army knife out of the depths of my backpack and started playing with it. I've been carrying it everywhere since I stole it from my dad's drawer when I was 9. Not that he didn't notice. He found out right away but let me keep the knife.
"Hey! We wanted this seat!"
I looked up to see a group of three freshman girls, that worst kind that roams Potomac High with UGGs in 90 degree heat and I-wanna-puke pink Velour tracksuits.
"Well we were here first, so there's not much to discuss here. It's not like you're gonna ask as to move or anything," Olivia laughed in her obviously fake innocent voice. I chuckled. It was just my sister's quirky way of saying "come at me if you dare".
"Actually we... were?" one of the girls tried talking back but it didn't seem to go according to her plan because I picked that exact moment to switch my knife from can opener to blade.
"Listen here you little brats," I got up. This gave me the advantage of looking at them from up above. "You're new here so I'm gonna let that slide. If you don't leave now or if this happens again I might just take that pink little phone of yours and shove it where the sun don't shine."
They looked like they were gonna shit their pants and it was hilarious.
"You just love terrorizing kids don't you?" Olivia asked as soon as the girls ran away and the bus started moving.
"Chill. It's not like I pulled a gun out on them or anything. It's just an innocent game of showing those little brats where they belong."
Olivia lowered her voice to whisper
"You brought a GUN?"
I laughed.
"Bitch, what would people say if I had a gun? We're already risking enough by not wearing low rise jeans and flaunting in PE."
"And carryind a knife."
"You have one too!"
"Mine is better concealed," Olivia said and pulled her tiny pocket knife on a chain from under her shirt. Mom gave her that necklace on our 10th birthday. Since then she didn't take it off once.
The conversation ended at that. I just clipped my knife onto my belt buckle, put my headphones in and watched how the bus rolled through the Virginian suburbs.
