The group hadn't been walking for more than two hours when Hera started to hear something. She looked around, trying to pinpoint what it was. It took a moment, but when she finally realized, her face fell.
"Run! Now!" She yelled from the back of the group.
The others turned to her and saw the urgency in her expression. They didn't question her order, just broke into sprints.
It was a free-for-all as the Reavers descended on their prey. The kids were fleeing in all directions, desperately trying to find cover in the maze of trees, bullets spraying. Hera had Laura's hand, pulling her along as they tried to evade capture. They caught up with Ella, who was cornered by several soldiers advancing on her. Her eyes rolled up in her head as she drew on her powers, and Pine needles lifted from the ground and tore from the trees, swirling into a whirlwind. The needles enveloped the soldiers in a vortex, blinding them, stabbing them, shredding their skin, filling their mouths, gagging them.
A soldier grabbed Ella from behind, covering her eyes. The needles fell to the ground. As he proceeds to shackle her wrists, Laura leaped on his back, spearing him with her claws. Laura and Ella ran to Hera as other soldiers fired upon them. Laura tried to pull her friend, but Ella simply wasn't fast enough.
"Ella! Run faster! Run!" Laura yelled as she took a shot to the leg, stumbling, healing, limping, but still moving. She looked back to see Ella had been hit and was lying in the leaves.
"Ella!" Hera yelled, stripping a glove off and running as she skid across the leaves towards the girl. She grit her teeth as several bullets hit her, tearing through her torso. Her hand gripped Ella's, but there was nothing to heal. She felt no pain, no anything. It was just...emptiness. Hera choked out a strangled sob. She was supposed to protect these kids.
Laura crossed back to Ella to find her dead, Hera clutching her hand. With soldiers converging, Laura grabbed Hera's shoulder. Hera looked up, her eyes meeting Laura's. Their eyes held the same understanding - this was no place to mourn. Hera had promised too much to too many to quit now. She stood and grabbed Laura's hand with her own bare one. She was going to take care of Laura in every way she possibly could.
The pair fleed toward other children up ahead. Some soldiers turned as they heard gunfire and mens' screams from behind them.
Jonah used his ocular mirror connection, making one of the Reavers aim his gun at his own men, mowing them down. Then he mimed his "puppet" Reaver into aiming his automatic rifle at himself, shooting himself in the chin.
Delilah was caught against a tree. She breathed on her captor's arm, freezing it solid. Then she shattered his frozen limb, and the soldier screamed in agony as more Reavers grabbed Delilah, restraining her.
Laura and Hera were finally cornered by Reavers, all pointing their weapons at them. Hera held Laura close behind her, a knife in her ungloved hand and a pistol on her other. Laura snarled and slashed at their rifles. But then they heard a primal scream and looked up to see Logan sprinting toward them, eyes aflame. He slaughtered the men surrounding the two in a swirl of blood.
The trio then moved on, chasing after the convoy, slashing through several more Reavers emerging from the woods to ambush them. At the end of this family fight, Logan stumbled, out of breath, motioning for Laura to move on, as she slashed at one more Reaver. Hera kneeled beside him, her bare hand clutching his arm. She could feel the pain he was in and did her best to heal him quicker.
"Laura! Now!" Logan yelled, his hand coming to rest on Hera's arm.
Laura obeyed, starting to run, but looked back at Logan and Hera, both still panting for air. His fresh wounds were not healing so fast anymore, and Hera was trying to help heal him. Laura knew what he'd done.
