(Y/n) sat in vigil, her entire world narrowing to the rhythm of Five's shallow breathing. The room was eerily quiet, save for the distant hum of machinery that echoed in the sterile space. Time felt warped, stretched impossibly thin between seconds as she waited for any sign of movement. Her thoughts tangled and looped in on themselves like an endless carousel, circling through memories and fears.

She tried to focus on the steady cadence of his breath. It grounded her in some way. The soft rise and fall of his chest offered a semblance of calm. But beneath that, she was afraid—afraid that he might not wake up.

In her mind, she counted the seconds between his breaths, a way to keep her mind from spiraling too far.

1... 2... 3...

The moments dragged on, each second stretching into a lifetime. Every breath he took became a minor victory, but the waiting gnawed at her, hollowing out her chest.

...40... 41...

She held her breath without realizing it, hoping, praying for a sign that he was coming back to her.

...60...

The minutes bled into hours. Her muscles ached from the tension of holding herself so rigidly in place, but she didn't move, didn't dare break the fragile connection she felt with Five. Now and then, her fingers would brush against his, seeking reassurance in the warmth of his skin.

...720...

She blinked wearily, exhaustion tugging at the edges of her consciousness, but she fought it off. She refused to close her eyes. The night stretched on, and the quiet of the room became almost suffocating.

...6,480...

And then, in the silence, something shifted. At first, she wasn't sure if she had imagined it—the flutter of eyelashes, the barely there twitch of his fingers beneath hers. She leaned forward, her breath catching in her throat.

Five's waking up.

(Y/n) watched with bated breath as Five's eyelids fluttered, his fingers twitching ever so slightly.

"Five?" she whispered, her voice almost swallowed by the heavy silence of the room. The words barely passed her lips, as though any louder might hurt him. "Can you hear me?"

For a moment, it seemed as though he might slip back into unconsciousness, lost in that endless void where she couldn't follow. But then his eyelids flickered again, a small, gradual sign that he was fighting his way back. His eyes finally opened, hazy with confusion, his gaze unfocused as it drifted lazily across the room.

(Y/n) leaned in closer, her heart hammering in her chest as his gaze found her. A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips, faint but unmistakable.

"Hey," he murmured, his voice low and raspy, as though he hadn't spoken in days. The sound of it was a balm to her nerves, soothing the frayed edges of her fear.

(Y/n) exhaled a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her relief palpable as she returned his smile, though hers was tinged with emotion. "Hey," she whispered back.

Five blinked slowly, trying to sit up. His muscles protested the movement, but he pushed through it. (Y/n) quickly slipped on her gloves and moved to his side, offering support as she helped him rise. Despite her touch being gloved, there was an unmistakable tenderness in her actions, an unspoken understanding between them.
