They slipped out through the back door and into the maze-like alleys of the city. Herley led her through twists and turns, always checking over his shoulder. Yarfa’s breath came in short gasps, her heart racing, not just from the fear but from the exhilarating thrill of the unknown.
“What do they want?” Yarfa asked as they finally stopped in a dimly lit corner.
Herley looked at her, his expression serious. “A few months ago, you cracked a code for a freelance project. That code holds a key to a massive digital heist they’re planning. You’re the only one who can stop them.”
Yarfa’s mind raced back to the project — a simple job, or so she thought. “And you? Why are you helping me?”
He hesitated, then replied, “Let’s just say… I owe someone a debt. And if helping you pays that debt, I’ll do it.”
She narrowed her eyes, sensing there was more to his story. “Who do you owe?”
He smirked slightly. “That’s for another time. Right now, we need to move.”
