Chapter 5: Teeth and Tempers
———————
The sea around them stretched out in a vast, glittering expanse of blues and greens. Sun focused on the path ahead, eyes scanning the coral and the occasional fish that darted by. Moon, on the other hand, drifted lazily beside him, his movements fluid and unhurried. Razor swam in zigzags, chasing fish only to abandon the pursuit the moment something else caught his attention.
The silence between them was palpable, but it didn't last.
"So," Moon began, his voice dripping with amusement, "where exactly are you dragging us off to, Sun? Or are we just swimming in circles?"
Sun clenched his jaw, refusing to take the bait. "I'm not dragging you anywhere. You're the one who decided to tag along."
Moon let out a low chuckle, his sharp eyes glinting with mischief. "True, true. But I figure since I'm here, I might as well know what we're doing. You're not one of those 'wandering souls' types, are you? Searching for meaning in the sea?"
Sun sighed heavily, his tail flicking with irritation. "I have a destination. I don't need to explain myself to you."
Moon floated upside down, arms behind his head, lazily keeping pace. "Oh, come on. You're no fun, Sun. Here we are, two unlikely companions on an adventure, and you won't even tell me what it's about. Isn't this the part where you spill your tragic backstory?"
"There's no tragic backstory," Sun muttered, his voice tight with frustration. "And we're not companions."
Moon smirked, swimming closer, his teasing voice dropping to a mocking whisper. "No tragic backstory? Oh, come on. Everyone has one. Let me guess—your village was destroyed by a rogue whale? Or maybe you're searching for a long-lost love who was swept away by the currents?"
Sun shot him a glare. "Will you just stop? This isn't some storybook, Moon."
"That's disappointing," Moon sighed dramatically, swirling around Sun in a slow circle. "I was hoping for something juicier. Maybe a broken heart? A revenge quest?"
Sun's patience frayed even further. "Why do you care?"
Moon grinned, the playful malice never leaving his eyes. "I don't. I'm just bored."
Sun huffed, speeding up slightly in the hopes that Moon would take the hint and leave him alone. But the siren, ever relentless, matched his pace effortlessly.
"Let me guess," Moon continued, clearly entertained by Sun's irritation. "You're the type who grew up in a peaceful little reef. Everyone was nice to each other. Probably spent your days playing with dolphins and collecting pretty shells, right?"
Sun's tail whipped sharply through the water as he shot Moon another glare. "And you're the type who thinks it's funny to poke at people until they snap."
Moon feigned shock. "Me? Oh no, I would never." His smirk widened. "But if you do snap, I wouldn't blame you. Seems like you've been holding a lot in."
Sun clenched his fists, trying to focus on the calming rhythm of his tail slicing through the water. The last thing he wanted was to give Moon the satisfaction of seeing him lose his temper. "I'm not going to snap. I just want to get to where we're going without you constantly talking."
"Talking is the only way I'll survive this boredom," Moon replied smoothly, shrugging. "You don't strike me as the conversational type, though. Too bad for you, I like to talk."
"Obviously."
They swam in silence for a few moments longer, the only sound the gentle rush of the ocean around them. Sun kept his eyes ahead, desperately trying to focus on their destination, but Moon's constant presence was like an annoying shadow he couldn't shake.
