~ A Few Hours Later ~
"Vice-prez. Vice-prez. Vice-prez," I repeated to myself as I made my way to the Student Council office on the third floor of the school. The very first meeting was starting in a few minutes, and I had mixed feelings about getting to know the other members of the Council. Bree had told me earlier today that the JDC consisted of the captain of the wrestling team and an uptight secretary, so I didn't really know what to expect. What if I completely messed up on my responsibilities as the vice-president? What if the other students were a bunch of idiots?
I took a deep breath and opened the majestic doors of the Student Council office to walk inside. The first thing that I saw was a massive meeting hall made up of a vast conference table with red velvet chairs surrounding it, two giant mirrors in the back, and an unbelievably wide variety of books and folders neatly stacked on towering shelves. It looked like a whole library in here, except that it was about ten times more elegant and polished.
"Are you Mr. Flynn Armani, by chance?" a deep voice asked, and I looked up to see Seaside Heights' headmaster sitting at the head of the conference table.
"Mr. Masterson," I politely greeted, nodding. I always got so nervous whenever I saw him - his tall stature, crisp sense of style, and imposing beard never failed to intimidate me and every other student at this school. "Yes, I've been appointed the vice-president of the Student Council."
"Very good," he responded, ticking the corners of his lips upward. "I'm glad to introduce you to the Council's president and communications correspondent: Ethan Whitlock and Anna Laurier."
My gaze traveled over to the other two students seated at the table. ". . . Anna?" I said, recognizing the flutist of the Snowfall Woodwind Quartet.
"Oh, hey, Flynn. It's nice to see you here," she replied, giving me an amiable smile. Her bluish-gray hair was in its usual braid, and she was sitting two seats away from a tall guy with swept-back black hair and light gray eyes. He was wearing his student photo ID around his neck with a lanyard, and there was a serious expression on his face.
"Hi, I'm Ethan," he greeted, nodding curtly. "I'm looking forward to working with you, vice-president."
He looks like he's ready to get to work right this minute, I observed, returning his nod.
Just then, two girls walked into the office - one with long, straight dark purple hair and gray eyes, and the other with brown hair and hazel eyes. It was only when they got closer, though, that I realized that the second girl was Rori, clarinetist of the Snowfall Quartet.
"Hello, Mr. Masterson," the girl with purple hair said in a smooth, quiet voice. "I'm Kimberly Raven, and this is Rori Brown."
"Ah, our treasurer and secretary," the principal responded, clasping his hands together in approval. "I suppose that that means that everyone has arrived. Please take a seat and make yourselves comfortable."
When all five of us were settled, Mr. Masterson handed us the official Student Council booklets, and we began reading through the pages.
