Chapter 1: The Forgotten Anniversary
Jin stood in the middle of the dimly lit living room, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. The delicate aroma of the meal he had prepared filled the air, blending with the faint scent of roses that he had placed on the dining table. It was their third anniversary—three years since the day he and Namjoon had confessed their love for each other. The rest of the members had known for a while, and they had all supported them in keeping it secret from the world. Tonight, though, it was just supposed to be the two of them.
The clock on the wall ticked softly, its sound growing louder as the minutes passed. Jin glanced at the time, his smile faltering slightly. Namjoon was late, but that wasn’t unusual. Their schedules had been hectic recently, but he had hoped—no, he had been certain—that Namjoon would make time for this. It wasn’t just any day.
Jin checked his phone again, his fingers brushing over the screen. Still no messages. He sighed softly, walking over to the small dining table that he had carefully set for two. The candles flickered in the middle of the table, casting a warm glow over the plates of food he had prepared. It wasn’t anything extravagant, but it was made with love—his way of showing how much he cherished their time together.
“Maybe he’s on his way,” Jin whispered to himself, trying to shake off the creeping doubt in his mind. He sank into one of the chairs, resting his chin on his hand. His heart beat with a mix of excitement and nervousness.
Minutes turned into hours.
Jin glanced at his phone again. Still nothing. His shoulders slumped as the excitement began to fade, replaced by a growing heaviness in his chest. He stared at the empty seat across from him, imagining Namjoon’s wide smile and the way his dimples would deepen when he saw the surprise Jin had planned.
But now, that seemed like a distant hope.
The clock struck midnight, and Jin’s eyes began to droop. He hadn’t planned to wait this long, but something inside him refused to leave. Maybe, just maybe, Namjoon would walk through that door any second now.
Eventually, exhaustion won out. Jin’s head nodded, his eyelids fluttering closed as he fell asleep in the chair, his body slumped against the table.
---
Namjoon walked into the dorm, barely aware of how late it was. His mind was foggy with exhaustion. The day had been long—interviews, rehearsals, and meetings that stretched far past what anyone had expected. He kicked off his shoes and dropped his bag by the door. The only thing on his mind was crashing into his bed.
He moved silently, careful not to wake anyone. He missed the sight of Jin asleep at the table, his silhouette blending into the shadows of the dim room. Namjoon rubbed his temples, heading straight for his room. The soft thud of his door closing was the only sound he made before he collapsed onto his bed, falling asleep within seconds.
---
The soft rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle glow over the dorm. Jin stirred in his chair, blinking awake as his stiff neck protested from the awkward position he had fallen asleep in. He lifted his head slowly, eyes adjusting to the morning light. The first thing he noticed was the cold, untouched plates of food on the table.
His heart sank.
Namjoon hadn’t come. At least…he hadn’t come to the surprise Jin had planned. His gaze flicked to the clock, realizing it was already late in the morning. Panic surged through him as he scrambled up from the chair, rushing to Namjoon’s room.
The bed was neatly made.
Jin stood in the doorway, his heart dropping into his stomach. Namjoon was already gone.
He swallowed hard, his hands shaking as he stepped back into the living room. The roses on the table seemed to mock him now, their vibrant red petals a painful reminder of the night that had passed. He had spent hours preparing everything, pouring his heart into making the night perfect. But Namjoon… he hadn’t even remembered.
Jin’s phone buzzed on the table, breaking through the silence. He picked it up, hoping—praying—that it was Namjoon with an explanation. But it wasn’t. Just a schedule reminder for the day.
He sank onto the couch, holding the phone tightly in his hands. His chest felt tight, like something was pressing down on him, making it hard to breathe. Tears prickled at the corners of his eyes, but he blinked them back. Crying wouldn’t change anything. It wouldn’t bring Namjoon back.
---
Later that day, Jin barely spoke to anyone. The other members could sense something was off, but no one pressed him for details. Even Hoseok, who always seemed to know when something was wrong, kept his distance. He watched Jin from across the room, a worried frown on his face.
“Hyung, are you okay?” Jimin asked softly, sitting down next to Jin during their short break.
Jin forced a smile, nodding. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired.”
Jimin didn’t seem convinced, but he didn’t push any further. He gave Jin’s shoulder a gentle squeeze before walking away.
Hoseok, however, couldn’t take his eyes off Jin. He had always known something was different between Jin and Namjoon, even before the others found out. He could see the way they looked at each other, the way they moved in sync without even trying. It was a love that was so obvious, yet they kept it hidden from the world. Hoseok had accepted that he would never be more than a friend to either of them, but seeing Jin like this… it made his heart ache in a way he couldn’t ignore.
Jin didn’t need to say a word for Hoseok to know that he was hurting. And as much as it pained him, all Hoseok could do was be there for him—from a distance.
---
Jin’s mind was still on Namjoon as the day dragged on. He replayed the events of the previous night in his head over and over, each time feeling the sting of disappointment a little more. By the time the evening rolled around, he was emotionally drained.
Just as he was about to leave the studio, his phone buzzed again. It was a message from Namjoon.
**Namjoon**: “Sorry I couldn’t make it last night, hyung. I had to leave early this morning too. Let’s catch up soon.”
Jin stared at the message, his fingers trembling as he typed a short reply.
**Jin**: “It’s fine. Take care.”
But it wasn’t fine. Not even close.
