SUNLIGHT FILTERED INTO THE ROOM, too bright for my aching head. I groaned, blinking against the harsh light, and pulled the blanket over my face. My body ached, my stomach churned, and a sharp throb pulsed behind my eyes, reminding me of last night's mistakes.

I slowly opened my eyes, the edges of the room blurry, but familiar. I was home. Somehow, I'd made it back here. Or, more accurately, I'd been brought back. Flashes of the night before flickered in my mind—Jude's arm around my waist, guiding me out of the club. Heat crept up my neck as the memory of him walking me through the crowd came back in pieces.

I sat up slowly, rubbing my temples as I tried to piece everything together. My head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and my stomach twisted with the familiar nausea that came with a night of heavy drinking. The last clear memory I had was Jude pulling me away from some guy—some guy I couldn't even remember.

I groaned, burying my face in my hands. Why did I always let things get so out of control?

Drinking had become my way of coping, a way to quiet the chaos in my head. It had been that way for a while, ever since my dad taught me, in his own messed-up way, that a bottle could be your best friend when life became too much. He'd always been a heavy drinker, and I guess I'd inherited that tendency. I wasn't drinking every day, but nights like last night were becoming more common. Nights where I drank until I forgot—until everything was blurry and the world felt a little less heavy.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand, interrupting my thoughts. I grabbed it, squinting at the bright screen.

Trent 🤮🤮

Trent 🤮🤮
did jude get you home safely?

Typical Trent, always checking in, even though he was probably too busy with Chloe to worry about me last night. I tapped out a quick reply.

I sighed and dropped the phone back on the bed, but it buzzed again almost immediately. This time, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the name on the screen.
