What did it matter? Playing the perfect doll was what they were good for wasn't it. They made it back to the scanner without really seeing anything, but as they went through a Spider fell over in front of them. She was dead.
What xe wouldn't give to be the one on the ground. Now there was an idea.
"Don't be alarmed, there was an unfortunate malfunction in the generation. They had to terminate the line." One of the guards said as they pulled the corpse of the Spider off to the side.
That didn't make sense. They must have hit the kill switch. They all had them, but they hit entire generations. In order to kill one of them everyone that got their first mod that same year from that same company would die too. Hundreds, if not thousands of them would have died today. What's one more?
Instead of turning towards their playhouse Lee turned towards the stacks. Towards Danny's house with its little spiky plant. Maybe he'd let xer see it again just one last time. Though after the dance maybe he wouldn't want to see xer.
It didn't matter. Lee had to see him first. Xe would tell him he was the only person who ever made xer feel human. Danny should know that. He should know that he mattered to someone, people liked that. The clang of xer steps felt like church bells, one last harmony. Lee rang his door alert. Nothing.
Xe waited, and eventually sank back against his door, it's not like xe had any other pressing issues. They could spare some time before they found an empty air lock. Xe knew how to bypass them. Lee couldn't wait until Hero ratted out who jail broke them. Xe would never be a doll again. Not for anyone.
"Lee?" Danny's voice pulled them out of their dark thoughts. It was rough, and when xe took him in he looked as shattered as xe felt.
"Hey." Lee whispered, he dropped down next to xer, and sagged in on himself. Lee leaned xer head on his shoulder. He let his own lean gently against xers. They stayed like that for a long time.
"Do what?" Xer voice sounded perfect despite their raw throat. The perks of a fake voice box.
"Did you jailbreak that kid? Hero." He cleared his throat, and shifted so he could see xer tear stained face.
"Would you arrest me if I had?" Lee asked instead of answering. He ran a hand through his hair. It was a mess. Xe had never seen it anything but perfect.
"No. I wouldn't." For some reason xe believed him when he said it. Lee had never seen him like this.
"I tried to tell him no when I found out he was resistance, but I needed to know how to help Emiel. They stole our ship. The one you have now, the Chainbreaker. It was supposed to save us." Lee hid their face in the fabric of his under shirt. Where had his uniform gone? Danny hummed his understanding, but didn't clap cuffs on xer.
"Chainbreaker is a good name. They couldn't stop him, even with the kill code. He did it. Things are chaos." Danny held his hand out palm up for xer. Lee didn't take it, if they did they wouldn't have the strength to go through with it.
"I just came to tell you thanks. I wanted you to know that you're one of the only people I am happy I met." Lee got up, and he watched with his brows pinched together.
"What are you talking about?" Danny sprang to his feet after xer. Lee took his head in both hands, and pressed a kiss to his brow.
"Goodbye Danny." Lee whispered, but to xer surprise, he shifted between xer and the steps faster than xe thought possible.
"Stop being vague. What exactly are you planning? I won't stop you if you have some way to leave, you just have to tell me so I know you'll be okay. Maybe I can help." Danny pleaded. Lee stared into his eyes, and tried to memories each fleck of green in the sea of blue.
