Kayla's POV

It was a Friday night, and Monica was crashing in my dorm for the weekend. We both needed a break after a hectic week of classes. Skylar was out of town, and the vibe was chill, so it felt like the perfect time to unwind. The glow of the string lights in my room made the whole space feel cozy as we spread out on my bed, scrolling through our phones.

I saw a missed FaceTime call from Kiara and quickly dialed her back. Her face popped up on the screen, looking both tired and happy.

"Hey, girl!" Kiara greeted, a smile spreading across her face. "How's everything going?"

I smiled back. "Good, just hanging out with Monica tonight. What about you? How's Trenton?"

Her whole face lit up when I mentioned her baby boy. "Girl, he's getting so big! I swear he's growing too fast. And classes at U of H are going pretty well. I'm trying to keep up, but Trenton keeps me busy."

I nodded. "I can imagine. And how's T.J.? Still with Winter?"

Kiara rolled her eyes playfully. "Yup. She's sweet, but it's still weird seeing him all boo'd up. I'm happy for him, though."

Monica looked up from her phone, curious, attempting to whisper she said, "Who's Winter?"

I quickly filled her in on T.J.'s new girl before turning back to Kiara. "Anyway, I'm glad you're managing everything. You make it look easy."

Kiara chuckled. "Trust me, it's not. But we're doing okay. I miss y'all though."

"Same here, but we'll visit soon," I promised.

After catching up with Kiara for a bit, I hung up and turned back to Monica. She was flipping through a magazine, her legs stretched out next to mine.

"So, how's the dating scene treating you?" I asked, propping myself up on my pillow.

Monica laughed softly. "Honestly? It's been kind of a mess. There was this one girl who seemed cool, but turns out she just wanted a good time and ghosted me after."

I frowned, shaking my head. "That sucks. People are weird. You deserve way better than that."

Monica shrugged, but I could tell it still stung. "Yeah, I'm over it now. What about you? Any drama?"

I laughed, rolling my eyes. "Well, there was this dude who came over talking about wanting to chill. But of course, he tried more than that, and when I told him to leave, he flipped out. Started cussing me out, so I kicked him out."

Monica winced. "Damn, thats crazy, niggas weird. Mfs aint got sense anymore huh?"

"Not at all," I said, shaking my head. "But it's whatever. I'm just trying to focus on my stuff right now."

We talked more, the conversation flowing easily as the night went on. Before long, we were sitting closer, our legs touching, and I couldn't help but notice how comfortable I felt around her. There was this lightness to our friendship, but it was starting to feel like something more, and I wasn't sure how to handle that yet.

Monica's POV

I could feel Kayla glancing at me every so often, and it was cute how she was trying to be subtle about it. The movie was playing, but her attention kept drifting back to me. I smirked, catching her in the act.

"Kayla," I said teasingly, "why you looking at me like you're trying to jump in my skin or something?"

She blinked, her face turning a bit red as she tried to play it off. "In your dreams, nigga. Watch the movie," she shot back, rolling her eyes.
