Little Sister is Better!

With Lin Jingyan's help, Lin Manhui quickly finished making twenty silk flower hairpins.

Lin Manhui picked up a hairpin, pinned her heavy bangs to the side of her face, her long eyebrows arching, her eyes bright. Her pale, weak face, framed by the green silk flowers, showed a touch of delicate beauty.

Lin Jingyan looked at her with joy, saying, "My little sister looks quite good." He then found an old newspaper, carefully wrapped the remaining hairpins, and stuffed them into his backpack.

In the past, Lin Manhui had been full of insecurities, wanting to hide away and not daring to look people in the eye. Timid, introverted, and prone to crying, her five older brothers had worked hard to protect her fragile and sensitive heart, but with little success.

Now, seeing his little sister finally willing to show her forehead and smile brightly, Lin Jingyan and Lin Jingxiong felt warm inside. They wouldn't have thought that her soul had wandered through the apocalypse for years.

The advantage of Jianshan Farm was its rice paddies. The supply of food was secure, and there was enough rice to eat. Although there were still supply regulations, the allocation was much higher than that for urban households.

According to Hunan Province standards, urban males received 17 jin of grain per month, females 15 jin, and children 13 jin; the farm provided an average of 5 jin extra grain per person. Don't underestimate this extra 5 jin; in the 1970s, it was an enviable benefit.

After cooking a large pot of rice, dinner consisted of stir-fried spinach and a big bowl of sauerkraut. Lin Jingxiong took the last egg from the jar and steamed a fluffy egg dish, sprinkled with chopped green onions and a few drops of sesame oil. It smelled delicious.

Lin Jingyan praised, "This sesame oil is really good. It must be from the oil mill owned by Third Brother's friend, right?"

Lin Jingxiong nodded, carefully placing the small bottle, only three inches high, back in the top corner of the cupboard, handling it with some care. "Yes, this sesame oil is not produced in large quantities. It's said to be sent to Beijing for state banquets. It's top-notch. You can't get it unless you're an insider."

Lin Jingyan swallowed and rubbed his hands, taking the steamed egg from the pot. The bowl was too hot, so he quickly placed it on the stove edge, covering his ears with both hands.

His clumsy appearance made Lin Manhui laugh. She took a clean cloth, used it to support the bottom of the bowl, and placed the steamed egg on the small square table in the main room.

Just as the dishes were set on the table, a loud male voice came from the door, "Fifth Brother, come quickly!"

Upon hearing the voice, Lin Jingyan jumped up. "Third Brother—" He dashed out the door, and soon his excited voice could be heard, "Ah, ah, ah, we have meat to eat!"

Lin Manhui looked up from the table. The door to the main room wasn't closed but had a blue cotton curtain hung to block the view. Third Brother Lin Jingren lifted the curtain and walked in.

Tall, imposing, rough, and strong.

The moment Lin Manhui saw Third Brother, these four words immediately came to mind. A fragment of memory was triggered, remembering how her eleven-year-older Third Brother had carried her to see the doctor, carried her to work, and fought for her...

"Third Brother..." A flood of grievances seemed to surge, and Lin Manhui's call unconsciously carried a hint of dependency.

Lin Jingren strode in, his deep blue work clothes carrying a strong mix of diesel and machine oil. The whole room was instantly filled with the smell of a repair shop.
