◎ Red-Eye Disease, Traitors, and Spies! ◎
The two of them had been running all the way to the school gate when they bumped into Lin Jiaming coming out of the infirmary.
Upon seeing Lin Manhui, Lin Jiaming's gaze flickered, and she shrank back slightly, clearly scared. Teacher Zhao, standing beside her, comforted her gently, "It's getting dark. I'll take you home."
Lin Manhui snorted but didn't press the issue.
Lin Jingyan, however, couldn't resist commenting, "Red-eye disease, traitors, spies!"
Zhao Zhihong shot him a glare. "Lin Jingyan, how dare you criticize others? Is a public self-criticism so honorable? I'll visit your home this weekend for a home visit—be ready for it!"
The mention of a home visit successfully shut Lin Jingyan up. He thought of the third brother's fists and the fourth brother's nagging and shivered, starting to feel a headache coming on.
"Jiaming—" Along with the sound of a bicycle bell, a woman's voice came from afar.
It was past the school dismissal time, and there weren't many pedestrians on Nonggong Avenue. Under the setting sun, a brand-new women's bicycle sped towards Lin Jiaming, arriving in just a few seconds.
A figure jumped off the bicycle, parked it, and strode up, grabbing Lin Jiaming in a hug with a protective look, glaring fiercely at Lin Manhui and Lin Jingyan.
The newcomer had a chubby figure, a round face, and short ear-length hair. Her voice was strong and resolute as she spoke, "What are you doing bullying my daughter?"
Lin Jiaming seemed to have found her pillar of support and clung to the chubby woman's waist, bursting into tears. "Mom, Mommy..."
The newcomer was Lin Jiaming's mother, Yang Jingfen, the chairman of the sugar factory's workers' union. She opened her arms to embrace Lin Jiaming, patting her back and soothing her gently. "There, there, sweetheart. Mommy's here. Don't cry."
Lin Jiaming cried so hard she was hiccuping, her emotions a mix of grievance, frustration, regret, guilt, and fear all pouring out in her mother's warm embrace.
Having sent the anonymous complaint to trouble the Lin siblings, which left no traces or handwriting, the culprit had expected it to go unnoticed. But Lin Manhui didn't play by the rules and immediately retaliated. Now, in pain all over, she regretted it deeply.
Yang Jingfen, while comforting her daughter, shot disdainful looks at Lin Manhui and Lin Jingyan.
Zhao Zhihong's partner, Feng Gang, who was the publicity officer for the sugar factory's workers' union, saw his partner's boss smiling somewhat obsequiously and explained from the side, "Chairman Yang, I was just about to take Lin Jiaming home when you arrived. Lin Manhui got into a fight at school today, and Lin Jiaming was wronged..."
Hearing this, Yang Jingfen jumped up like a cat with its tail stepped on. "Fight? What fight! My Jiaming is very sensible and would never start a fight. It's definitely Lin Manhui who hit her, right? How could she be so bullying!"
Seeing her so agitated, Teacher Zhao could only do her best to calm the parent's emotions. "Don't worry, I've already severely criticized Lin Manhui for her lack of discipline. She'll have to make a public self-criticism on Monday."
Yang Jingfen was furious. "A self-criticism is enough? Can I slap her twice and then have her make a self-criticism?"
After a whole day of turmoil, Zhao Zhihong was deeply exhausted but dared not offend Yang Jingfen. She had to muster her energy to patiently explain.
