April 12, 2023

The morning sun filtered through the large windows of my new condo unit, casting a warm glow over the room. The city below was already buzzing with activity, but I was focused on finishing unpacking and organizing my belongings. Despite the excitement of the new beginning, there was an undercurrent of anxiety about the task ahead.

I carefully placed the photograph of my twin sister on the desk, positioning it where it would remain a constant reminder of my purpose. The sketchbook, with its precious drawings, was tucked into a drawer, but its presence was a comforting reminder of the memories I had for my sister.

I scanned the room one last time, ensuring everything was in its place. Satisfied, I grabbed the last empty box and tucked it away in the closet for future use. With my room now fully organized, it was time to focus on the next task at hand. The first priority was exploring the university. I reviewed the campus map that had come with the admission materials, carefully noting the locations of key buildings such as the faculty and other amenities. The thought of navigating the sprawling campus was both thrilling and a bit intimidating.

By late morning, I made my way to the university, eager to familiarize myself with the surroundings. The campus was a blend of historic architecture and modern facilities, alive with students hurrying somewhere and socializing in groups. My focus, however, was on finding the Admission office since I was instructed to get the ID they prepared for me.

Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Excuse me," a woman's voice said. I turned around to see a woman with long, wavy hair cascading down her back. She was about two inches shorter than me, exuding a warm and approachable aura. "Sawasdee-kha, nong. Is your name Nai Phunaissip Chearavanont?" she asked.

I was momentarily confused about how she knew my name, and it took me a moment to nod in response. "Yes, it's me. Do I know you?" I politely asked.

She chuckled softly at my question before introducing herself. "No need to worry, I don't bite. I'm P' Dawn, your senior and mentor. The dean called and sent me your ID." She reached into her bag, retrieved something, and handed it to me. "Here, take it. I saw you looking so lost so I came to you. If you go to the office, you might be waiting for a long time since all the staff are in a meeting right now."

I took the ID from her, still a bit surprised by her sudden appearance. "Thank you, P' Dawn. I wasn't expecting to meet a senior and mentor so soon," I said, trying to mask my lingering confusion with a smile.

"No problem, Nong Nai. I'm here to help you get settled," she replied warmly. "Why don't I show you around the campus since you already have your ID? It'll give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the place and ask any questions you might have."

I nodded, appreciating her friendliness and calm demeanor. "That sounds great. I could definitely use a guide."

As we walked toward a building, I inquired about the student clubs and organizations. "Actually, Orientation Week starts this coming Friday. I assume you weren't aware of that since I didn't have your LINE ID yet."

"Ah, I did read about it but wasn't sure when it would start," I admitted while handing her my phone with my LINE ID displayed. "Here, P' Dawn, let's add each other. I might need your help since I'm not very familiar with the university traditions."

She smiled at my initiative and we exchanged contact details. "I'll add you to the group chat with your peers and other seniors. Feel free to ask them anything about the activities."

We soon arrived at the hall, which was bustling with various food stalls. "This is our faculty's canteen," she said, pausing to take in the aroma. "Perfect timing! I can smell the freshly made Pang Ping (grilled bread). Would you like to try some?"
