'Okay, let's do this,' I pep talk myself but my voice barely audible above the rhythmic thud of footsteps down the street. 'They'll walk past this alley, and I'll appear just right behind Five. No big deal. This time, it won't be trouble, since he's last in the row.'
Hidden in the murky depths of the alley, falling behind a shadow cast by a towering building, locating five's shadow and appearing just behind him 'Hey'
Five spun around, his eyes wide with surprise and a flicker of something akin to fear. 'What-- how did you get past-'
'My name is y/n'
His surprise morphed into a frown. 'You shouldn't be in line.'
'You shouldn't be in line' I mocked him 'please , you're not the only who's special' 'You shouldn't be in line,' I mocked, mimicking his tone. He continued to pace his walking with his siblings .
I continued to lingered in his shadow with voice in a low murmur against his ear. 'I do this all day. I know every secret your family has ever said that you don't even know.'
He stopped abruptly, turning to face me. 'Really? What are you supposed to be? A mind reader?'
'Even better , a shadow lurker . so what do you do for fun?'
Just then, a booming voice sliced through the air. 'Number Five!' Sir Hargreeves's call was sharp and demanding. I instantly vanished from Five's shadow, melting back into the darkness.
'Who are you talking to?' Sir Hargreeves questioned, his gaze sweeping over his adopted son.
'No one,' Five replied, quickening his pace to catch up with his siblings.
'You should always be behind your brothers and sisters , always in sync'
Five said nothing. I was still hiding in his shadow.
It was confusing, I knew, to imagine someone hiding within a shadow. But a shadow wasn't just beneath my feet, it was all around us, everywhere. From the delicate wisp cast by a strand of hair to the darkness nestled within the folds of clothing, that was how it worked. My body, my essence, fragmented into minuscule atoms of shadow, existing in the spaces between light and dark.
Sir Hargreeves and the Five's other members arrive in their house .
'You'll be called for dinner , once it's ready''A woman with vibrant blonde hair and a seventh child, a girl with bangs and long, flowing brown hair emerged from the shadows of the hallway I had seen before couple of times and things weren't the best around hee 'Come along children,' she said, her voice softer than the stern pronouncements of their father with a warm smile.
