Ally's room was quiet, save for the faint ticking of the clock on the wall. She sat cross-legged on her bed, her head resting against the cool metal headboard, wrapped in a blanket as the afternoon shadows deepened. Austin sat beside her, his arm casually draped over her shoulders, but she could feel the tension in his body. Neither of them had spoken for a while, but the silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was heavy, though. Full of unspoken thoughts and decisions that lingered just out of reach.
Ally had slept off most of her fever since Austin arrived, but she was still worn out, emotionally and physically. Her mind kept drifting to the sacrifice Austin had made - walking away from his tour, from his career, just to be with her.
"Do you think Jimmy will ever forgive you?" Ally asked softly, finally breaking the silence. Her voice was a little raspy from the flu, but the warmth in Austin's gaze never faltered.
Austin sighed, leaning back against the headboard. "Jimmy's not thrilled, that's for sure. He's probably still pacing back and forth, yelling into his phone somewhere, but he'll get over it eventually. I think he knows how important you are to me. He just... doesn't understand it."
Ally frowned. "I feel bad. You didn't have to do this for me, Austin. I would've been okay."
Austin turned his head to look at her, his eyes soft but serious. "Ally, you don't get it. I had to do this. There was no question in my mind. You needed me, so I came. End of story."
"But I don't want you to have to choose between me and your career," she said, her voice faltering. "It's not fair to you. I don't want to hold you back."
Austin exhaled slowly, shifting so he was fully facing her. He took both of her hands in his and gave them a gentle squeeze. "You're not holding me back. If anything, you push me to be better - as a musician, and as a person. You're the one who helped me get through all the tough times in high school. You're the reason I can go out there and perform with so much confidence. I wouldn't be who I am without you."
Ally blinked back tears. She wanted to believe him, but the thought of being the cause of his career struggles still weighed heavily on her heart. "But what if this happens again? What if, someday, you have to make a choice between being with me and doing what you love? What if I keep you from reaching your full potential?"
Austin's brow furrowed as he shook his head, clearly frustrated by the very idea. "I don't ever want you to think like that, Ally. You're not a roadblock in my life. You're the reason I keep moving forward." His voice softened as he added, "I didn't choose between you and my career. I chose us. And I'll keep choosing us, every time."
Her breath caught in her throat, the raw honesty in his words hitting her harder than she expected. She wasn't sure what to say. She felt guilty for doubting his commitment, for second-guessing his priorities, but at the same time, the weight of the sacrifices he was making sat heavily on her shoulders.
She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder, and he gently kissed the top of her head. "I love you, Austin," she whispered, her voice cracking just a bit.
"I love you too, Ally. So much," he replied, his arms wrapping around her tightly. "You're my home. No matter where I am, no matter what I'm doing, I'm always going to come back to you."
For a moment, the only sound in the room was the rhythmic ticking of the clock and the quiet hum of the air conditioner. Ally closed her eyes, allowing herself to relax in his arms, feeling the warmth and security that his presence always brought. But her mind was still racing, still trying to process the weight of what Austin was willing to give up.
After a while, Austin shifted slightly, adjusting the pillow behind him. "You know," he said, his voice lightening a bit, "I've been thinking about something."
Ally pulled back slightly to look at him, curiosity piqued. "What's that?"
"Maybe it's time for a break," Austin said, meeting her gaze. "From the tour, I mean. I've been going non-stop for a while now. It's been amazing, but it's exhausting too. And I don't want to keep missing out on things that are important - like you, or even just taking time to breathe."
Ally's eyes widened. "Are you serious? You'd really take a break?"
"Yeah, I am." Austin smiled, but there was a seriousness behind his expression. "I've been thinking about it for a while now. Coming back here to be with you just made me realize how much I've missed being with you - and not just over the phone or in short visits between shows. I want to be more present."
"But what about the fans? The music?" Ally asked, still trying to wrap her head around it.
"They'll still be there when I get back. The music's not going anywhere," Austin reassured her. "And maybe it'll be good for me to step back for a bit, recharge, and come back stronger. I'll still write and record, but I don't need to be on the road all the time."
Ally stared at him, stunned by his words. He was offering to take a step back, to prioritize their relationship in a way she hadn't expected. It was overwhelming, but in the best possible way.
"You'd do that... for me?" she whispered.
"For us," Austin corrected, his smile widening as he pulled her closer. "Like I said, I'll always choose us."
Ally let out a shaky breath, her heart swelling with emotion. Maybe it wasn't about one of them sacrificing for the other. Maybe it was about finding a balance - about supporting each other through the ups and downs, and knowing that they didn't have to choose between love and their dreams. They could have both.
And in that moment, Ally finally allowed herself to believe it.
"Okay," she said softly, leaning into his embrace. "Then I choose us too."
