Out of Oklahoma - Tyler Owens

Chapter one

Sadie and Kate are walking in the middle of an empty field, Kate taking pictures and Sadie just enjoying the view, she can smell the rain in the air.

Thunder is rumbling in the distance.

They both smile at each other and reach for each other's arms and begin to giggle. Sadie takes Kate by the hand and begins to drag her back towards the cars so they can wake the others up.

Kate jumps into the trunk to wake her boyfriend, Jeb.

Sadie runs toward the other van and honks the horn to wake everybody up. Praveen startles awake, Addy sits up slowly while putting her glasses on. And then there's Javi who is sleeping on the ground and not waking up.

Sadie runs over and jumps on him saying "wake up, wake up!"

"What the hell?" Javi asks after Sadie gets off him.

"Storm's here, guys! Let's go!" Sadie tells her friends.

"Nah. Nah, it can't be" Javi says to her.

Javi groans while sitting up.

"God, I went way too hard last night," Javi says.

Sadie notices that Javi is about to lay down again and says "nope, not today my friend" while grabbing the sleeping bag he's using as a blanket.

"Come on Javi, get up!" Sadie tells him.

Once everybody is up, Sadie stands next to Kate in front of Jeb, who has a camera pointed at them.

"Is it on?" Sadie asks, while fixing her hair.

"Jeb, are you sure you're recording? I don't see a red light" Kate tells her boyfriend.

"Oh" Jeb mumbles while turning the camera upside down to see if there is a red light. "Yeah. Recording" he says after making his assessment.

"Okay" Kate says with enthusiasm in her voice, while doing a little jump.

"Don't make us laugh. Stop it" Kate tells her boyfriend, while putting her arm around Sadie's shoulders.

"Okay. Today, our science team from the Tornado Tamer project is out in the field, about to chase a storm southwest of us" Kate explains to the camera as she and Sadie point toward the dark skies above.

"Our experiment is designed to decrease the moisture inside of a tornado to see if we can make it collapse," Sadie continues to explain.

"Tell the folks how you do that, Kate, Sadie" Jeb says from behind the camera.

"Well, first, we got to find a tornado to suck up our superabsorbent polymers in these barrels" Kate explains as Sadie shows the barrels like they're on a game show, which makes Kate laugh.

"Diapers," Addy says from the side of the girls. Sadie and Kate look over to Addy and Jeb does the same with the camera in hand.

"Tell them it's the same stuff they use in diapers" Addy says, when she notices the camera is pointed at her she makes a 'hmm' noise.

"Oh, yeah" Sadie says and Kate then takes over "it's nontoxic."

Sadie and Kate do their special handshake and Addy comes over for a high-five from each of the girls.

Sadie zones out as she spins the gold ring on her finger, staring off into space.

Kate notices her best friend zoning out and walks over to her, "hey, you okay?"

Which makes Sadie jump since she hadn't noticed Kate walk up to her.

"Yeah, I'm fine" Sadie tells her, to which Kate can see right through her best friend.
