"I have a very childlike rage, and a very childlike loneliness."
Richey Edwards

—— On a daily basis, usually, kids could be seen running around; playing tag or whatever made up games to fill their time. But now, now that the world is fell further into the pit its dug for itself, kids were a rare sight. If you did see a child, they were likely to have a weapon in hand and a scowl on their face.

"So, he manages to find a kid, but the wrong one?" A tall man stood, outside a white house with his hands on his hips. He wore a black shirt and kaki pants. Sporting a buzzcut.

"Shane-" A man, with a stubbly beard, stood next to him. "He couldn't just leave the baby to die." He tried to reason with his best friend. The sun hit their backs, the overhang of the house shading over.

Shane scowled, "I'm not saying he shoulda' left it, Rick. But how many fuckin' kids is Daryl gonna bring back before it's Sophia, huh?" He pushed on, getting in Rick's face, the grim expression unnerving.

"Back off. He did the right thing. Lay off." The bearded man checked their shoulder, marching past.

——

—— A blonde girl with large blue eyes stood in the doorway, "Hey, Daddy." She whispered to not spook her father or the baby in his arms.

The white haired man turned around with a smile, "Hey, Bethy." This was the first time in a while that she'd left her room since the world ended. Her face was pale, eyes dull with a small sparkle.

"How's she doin'?" Beth asked softly, strolling further into the room, coming up beside him and the baby girl.

"Better. She was a little hungry, so she wasn't alone that long. Which is good news." Hershel rocked Dawn slowly, "Good thing that archer boy found her when he did."

"Daryl." Beth corrected. Hershel rose a quizzing brow. "The archer is Daryl."

"Well, thank Daryl." The man fixed himself, bow finding respect for the spoken of man.

——

—— "Daryl was it?" Hershel walked up to the dark brunette. "What all was with the girl when you found her?" He asked, eyes squinting from the sun that pushed past the clouds.

"The food and supplies I brought back was packed up next to 'er." Daryl answered, brushing his hands down the arrow fletchings. "And a note." He dug into his pocket when Hershel rose a brow. "Here." He grunted.

The older man took the folded, crinkled paper from the archer, slipping it into his shirt pocket. "Thank you." He nodded before turning back to his house, walking up the wooden steps.

——

—— A brunette woman sat on the front steps of the Greene family home, hands tucked between her thighs. Her hazel eyes glued on Beth, who sat on the porch with the baby, — who she just learned was named Dawn — soothing her to slumber.

"What you lookin at, girl?" Shane's sudden voice startled the woman, making her jump and clutch her chest.

"Jesus, Shane." She breathed, "You need a bell." She whispered." She smiled softly, eyes training back on Dawn. The baby's eyes fluttering open, staring up at the blonde.

"Hey." The tall man leaned against the step railing. "Dont worry about some baby." The two made eye contact, the woman's eyes growing wide. "It's not gonna last long in this world." His final words circled in her head, watching him strut off.

"It's not gonna last long in this world." He doesn't see the baby as a human. He sees her as a burden. She concluded, shaking her head. She'll make it. She turned back to the porch, only for Beth to be gone and a small frown to crease its way onto her lips.
