The runestake is basically his life force. Shadow Men are created, not born. Being removed from the runestake will kill/unwrite him.
Day 4397 of sacrifices
Jenny and her friends won the game. Against all odds, they beat me. So I had to let them go. I had to watch the one that I loved walk away and never come back. The sad part was that I knew something was wrong as soon as she walked away, I felt the unnatural chill wrap itself around me. I finally had everything under control and the shadow men intervened.
They tried to claim Jenny and make her into one of their chew toys, but I couldn't let them. I wouldn't be able to sit around and watch as they tortured her in unimaginable ways. So I did the only thing I could do, I traded places with her. I knew what would happen. I knew that I would be removed from the runestake, I would be unwritten, but I couldn't let her die. I couldn't let her lose her future because of me. I threw her into these games and without me, she would have never known sorrow. I had to protect her from my ancestors, no matter what the cost was.
