Beneath his cool exterior-Megumi

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the campus, and a slight breeze stirred the cherry blossom petals that had started to drift from the trees. It was late afternoon, and the courtyard was relatively quiet, save for a few stragglers. I had been watching Megumi from across the courtyard, leaning casually against the railing of the academy steps, his eyes glued to the book in his hands. He had that focused, serious look on his face, the one he always wore when he was reading something important, but I knew him better than that by now. He wasn't half as intimidating as he pretended to be.

Not to me, at least.

With a mischievous grin, I pushed off the railing and sauntered toward him. The closer I got, the more I noticed the small details that made my heart flutter—how the light played across his dark hair, how his lashes were long and framed his intense eyes. He was always trying to act so composed, but there was a side to him that I had uncovered, one that he tried to hide from everyone else. Especially his friends.

I stopped just in front of him, and, as expected, he didn't immediately acknowledge me. His brows furrowed slightly, and his eyes darted toward the corner of the page like he was debating whether or not to look up. I smiled at the subtle twitch of his lips; even though he was pretending to focus on his book, he knew I was there.

"Hey, Megumi," I greeted, my voice teasingly light as I leaned down, positioning myself just enough to get into his line of sight.

He stiffened slightly, shifting the book up higher in an attempt to block my view of his face. "What do you want?" His voice was flat, but I could hear the faint hint of discomfort hidden beneath the tone. Classic Megumi.

"Oh, nothing much," I said, casually plopping myself down beside him on the stone bench. "Just thought I'd say hi. Maybe remind you that you've been looking extra handsome lately."

The change was almost instantaneous. His shoulders tensed, and I could see the tips of his ears turn a soft shade of pink. Still, he kept his eyes glued to the book, as if reading about cursed techniques was somehow going to save him from my teasing. But I wasn't about to let him off that easily.

"Did you hear me?" I continued, leaning in a little closer so that my arm brushed against his. His breath hitched just slightly, and I couldn't help but stifle a laugh. "I said you've been looking *handsome*, Megumi. In case you didn't know."

His fingers tightened around the edge of the book, but he refused to look at me. "I... I heard you," he muttered, voice barely above a whisper. His cheeks were definitely red now, the blush creeping up toward his temples.

"I don't know why you get so embarrassed," I mused, leaning back against the bench and crossing my legs as if I hadn't just shattered his composure. "You're allowed to take a compliment, you know."

"It's not—" he began, finally lowering the book enough to glance at me, but when his eyes met mine, he froze. I had that effect on him, and I relished every second of it. He blinked, clearly unsure how to respond, so he settled on flipping the page of his book, even though I was pretty sure he hadn't been reading it for the last several minutes.

I shifted closer, closing the distance between us as I rested my chin on his shoulder. "Come on, Megumi," I whispered softly, my lips dangerously close to his ear. "You know I'm just teasing."

His whole body went rigid, and his face turned an even deeper shade of crimson. "Stop," he muttered, clearly flustered. He wasn't mad—not really. He just didn't know how to handle it when I got like this.

I laughed softly, but instead of pulling away, I placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. It was a fleeting touch, barely there, but it was enough to send him into a complete tailspin. He jerked his head to the side, eyes wide and face practically glowing red now. "Y/N!" His voice came out strangled, and I had to bite back the urge to giggle.

"Relax," I said with a playful roll of my eyes. "It was just a kiss."

He shook his head, clearly struggling to compose himself. His hand shot up, covering his face as if that could somehow hide the evidence of his embarrassment. "You... you can't just... do that," he stammered, his voice muffled behind his palm.

I reached up and gently tugged his hand away, forcing him to meet my gaze. "You're cute when you're shy," I teased, watching as his eyes darted anywhere but at me. "Why do you hide this side of yourself from everyone else?"

Megumi's brows furrowed in frustration, but the blush on his cheeks betrayed him. "Because it's embarrassing," he mumbled, clearly wishing he could disappear into thin air.

"I think it's sweet," I said, tilting my head slightly as I studied his face. "You don't have to be all stoic and serious all the time, you know. I like you just the way you are."

For a moment, he was silent, his eyes flickering to mine before quickly darting away again. I could tell he was still flustered, but there was something else there too—something softer. "You're annoying," he muttered under his breath, though there was no bite to his words.

"I know," I replied with a grin, leaning back and giving him some space. "But you like me anyway."

He didn't deny it. Instead, he buried his face in his hands again, and I could practically feel the heat radiating off his skin. He was probably wishing that no one else was around to witness this, but I wasn't going to let him off the hook so easily.

"You know, it's kind of cute how you try to act all cool in front of the others," I said, watching as his ears turned pink again. "But I can see through it."

"Stop teasing me," he grumbled, lowering his hands just enough to shoot me a half-hearted glare. His voice was still shaky, though, and I knew I had won this round.

"Fine, fine," I said, holding up my hands in mock surrender. "I'll stop... for now."

He sighed, finally lowering his hands fully and giving me a long, exasperated look. But even though he was still blushing, there was a softness in his eyes that hadn't been there before.

"Thank you," he mumbled after a moment, his voice so quiet I almost missed it.

"For what?" I asked, genuinely curious.

"For not... for not making fun of me," he muttered, his gaze dropping to his lap. "For... being patient with me."

I smiled softly, my teasing demeanor fading as I reached out and placed a hand on his arm. "You don't have to thank me for that, Megumi. I like being with you—whether you're shy or serious or anything in between."

He didn't respond, but the blush on his face deepened, and I knew that beneath all the embarrassment, he appreciated it. He was still Megumi, after all—still guarded, still shy—but little by little, I was breaking down those walls. And every time I did, I saw a glimpse of the boy underneath, the one who cared more than he let on.

And that was more than enough for me.
