It had been a typical day at Jujutsu Tech, filled with intense training sessions and studying cursed energy. The campus hummed with life, students and sorcerers buzzing around, preparing for the next mission or practicing their techniques. I had been studying in the courtyard, sitting on one of the stone benches with my books spread out around me. The sun was beginning to set, casting the sky in hues of pink and gold. I was supposed to be focused on cursed technique theory, but my thoughts had drifted.
My mind, once again, wandered to Toge Inumaki.
Toge and I had been dating for a little while now, and while most people found him hard to get close to because of his cursed speech, we had developed an unspoken bond. His limited words didn't matter. I'd learned to understand him with just a glance or a gesture, and honestly, the way he looked at me told me more than words ever could. There was something reassuring in his presence, something safe. I found myself smiling, thinking about how he'd quietly hand me rice balls at lunch, or how his eyes softened when he was around me.
The wind picked up a little, rustling the pages of my notebook, pulling me out of my daydream. I absentmindedly reached for the book, trying to hold it down. But in my distraction, I didn't notice the ominous shift in the air, the creeping sense of malevolence that had begun to surround me.
It wasn't until the temperature suddenly dropped, and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up that I realized something was wrong. I looked up, startled. The once peaceful courtyard was now eerily silent. I felt it before I saw it—a dark, suffocating presence. My heart raced as I scanned the area. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it. A curse.
It was grotesque, with a twisted, misshapen body and several hollow, red eyes fixed on me. My breath hitched. I had been so wrapped up in my thoughts, so distracted, that I hadn't even sensed its approach. It was too close. Too close for me to react in time.
My body froze, paralyzed by the curse's overwhelming aura. It lunged toward me, its misshapen limbs stretching out, claws ready to strike. Panic shot through me. I couldn't move. I couldn't even think.
Suddenly, before I could even comprehend what was happening, a voice cut through the air, sharp and commanding.
"Stop."
In an instant, the curse halted mid-attack, its grotesque form shaking as it fought against the weight of the command. I gasped, my eyes widening in shock, and then relief flooded me. I knew that voice.
Toge.
He appeared out of nowhere, moving swiftly and gracefully, placing himself between me and the curse. His back was to me, his silver hair catching the last rays of the fading sun. His hands were clenched at his sides, his cursed speech radiating with power. The curse writhed, still struggling to break free from Toge's command, but it was no match.
"Get crushed," Toge said, his voice calm yet firm.
With a sickening crunch, the curse's body collapsed in on itself, the weight of Toge's words forcing it into the ground until it dissolved into nothingness. The air, once thick with malice, returned to normal, and I finally found myself able to breathe again.
I watched, my heart still pounding in my chest, as Toge turned to face me. His lavender eyes scanned me with concern, his expression unreadable but his body language tense. He stepped closer, his hand reaching out to me, gently brushing my arm as if to make sure I was unharmed.
"I'm... I'm okay," I managed to stutter, still shaken. My voice was small, and I could barely believe what had just happened. I had been careless, distracted. If it hadn't been for him, I didn't want to think about what could've happened.
Toge tilted his head, eyes softening as he gave me a once-over, checking for injuries. I could tell he wanted to say more, but his cursed speech wouldn't let him. He clenched his fist, frustration flickering in his eyes, before he simply muttered, "Salmon."
I smiled weakly at that, knowing it was his way of saying "good" or "it's fine." But it wasn't fine. I had been so distracted, so unaware, and Toge had stepped in at the last moment to save me. I looked up at him, my heart swelling with gratitude.
"Toge," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. "Thank you. I didn't even realize the curse was there until it was too late. You... you saved me."
He shook his head, as if to say, "It's nothing," but I knew better. My chest tightened with emotion. His eyes met mine, and in that moment, I saw everything—his worry, his relief, and his quiet affection.
Without thinking, I stepped closer to him, closing the distance between us. He blinked in surprise, but before he could react, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him into a kiss.
It was soft at first, tentative. I could feel his breath catch as his hands found their way to my waist, holding me gently but firmly, as if afraid I might slip away. But then, the kiss deepened, and I could feel the tension in his body melt away. My heart pounded in my chest, but this time it wasn't from fear—it was from something far more intense.
When we finally pulled away, I could see the faintest blush on his cheeks, his eyes wide with surprise. He looked at me like he wasn't quite sure what had just happened, but I smiled, leaning my forehead against his.
"You're incredible, Toge," I whispered, my voice soft and full of affection. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
He didn't say anything, but he didn't need to. His arms tightened around me for just a moment, and I felt the unspoken promise in that embrace.
We stood there for a while, just holding each other as the sun disappeared behind the horizon, the world around us growing still. In that moment, there was no need for words. We understood each other perfectly.
And I knew, without a doubt, that I was safe in his arms.
