Chapter 2: Catching Up (?)
---
Takeru awoke to the soft hum of his alarm, the pale morning light filtering through his curtains. He lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, letting the lingering warmth of sleep fade away. Today was different. The unease from yesterday's reunion with Kakeru still clung to him, but mixed with it was a sense of excitement-like things were finally falling back into place.
With a groan, Takeru swung his legs out of bed and hurried through his morning routine. Brushing his teeth, throwing on his uniform, and grabbing a quick breakfast felt mechanical, his mind already on school-and Kakeru. He was back, but something about him still felt distant, like a part of the boy he used to know hadn't come back at all.
The walk to school was filled with the usual sounds of chattering students and birds overhead, but Takeru barely noticed. As the school came into view, he slowed his pace, scanning the groups of students milling around.
And then he saw him.
Kakeru stood by the school gate, his back against the wall, his dark hair slightly disheveled. He looked up just as Takeru approached, those familiar green eyes locking onto his.
Takeru's heart skipped a beat. For a second, he felt like they were kids again-before everything changed.
"Morning," Kakeru said with a grin, pushing off the wall.
Takeru returned the smile, though a knot of curiosity twisted inside him. "Morning. Ready for day two?"
Kakeru nodded. "Yeah. Feels strange being back."
Takeru laughed lightly as they walked toward the entrance. "You're telling me." But beneath his lighthearted words, a flood of questions threatened to spill out. They were finally catching up, but something told Takeru there was a lot more to Kakeru's return than he was letting on.
Takeru's eyes sparkled as he grinned at Kakeru. "I've missed you."
Kakeru's smile faltered for a moment before he replied, "I've missed you too, Takeru."
They stood awkwardly for a moment, unsure how to bridge the gap between them. Then, Takeru's playful nature took over.
Takeru playfully nudged Kakeru. "Hey, let's grab seats together at lunch. I want to hear more about your adventures."
Kakeru's smile returned, his eyes crinkling. "Sounds like a plan."
As they entered their classroom, whispers and curious glances followed Kakeru. Takeru noticed, feeling a pang of protectiveness.
Throughout the morning classes, Takeru's attention drifted, his mind wandering to Kakeru. What secrets was he hiding? Why did he seem so... different?
At lunchtime, they claimed a spot in the courtyard, away from prying eyes.
"So, what's it like being back?" Takeru asked, unwrapping his sandwich.
Kakeru's gaze drifted, his voice low. "It's... complicated. A lot's changed, but some things feel the same."
Takeru's curiosity deepened. "Like what?"
Kakeru's eyes met his, a hint of vulnerability flickering. "Like us."
Takeru's heart skipped a beat at Kakeru's words. "Us?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kakeru nodded, his eyes searching Takeru's. "We used to be inseparable. I've missed that."
Takeru's chest tightened, memories flooding back. "I've missed it too," he admitted, his voice soft.
They sat in silence for a moment, the only sound the rustling of leaves.
"What happened, Kakeru?" Takeru asked, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Why did you leave so suddenly?"
Kakeru's gaze dropped, his shoulders tensing. "I... had to take care of some things."
Takeru sensed evasion, but didn't press. "And now? What brings you back?"
Kakeru's eyes locked onto Takeru's, intense. "You. I came back for you, Takeru."
Takeru's breath caught, his heart racing.
Just as Takeru processed Kakeru's words, a voice cut through the air.
"Well, well, well. Look who's back."
Takeru's classmate, Shinji, sauntered over, a sly grin spreading across his face.
Kakeru's expression turned guarded, his eyes narrowing.
Shinji's gaze flicked between them. "Rekindling old flames, huh? Or should I say... old secrets?"
Takeru's unease grew, sensing Shinji's insinuation.
"What are you talking about, Shinji?" Kakeru asked, his tone even.
Shinji chuckled. "Don't play dumb, Kakeru. We all know about your... Strange activities."
Kakeru's eyes flashed, a warning sign.
Takeru's mind raced. What secrets was Shinji hinting at?
Shinji's smirk grew wider. "You think you can just waltz back in here, Kakeru, after all the rumors?"
Kakeru's jaw clenched, his eyes blazing. "Mind your own business, Shinji."
Shinji snorted. "My business? You're the one who made it everyone's business with your mysterious disappearances and reappearances."
Takeru stood, placing a calming hand on Kakeru's arm. "Hey, let's not—"
But Kakeru shook him off, his gaze locked on Shinji. "You don't know what you're talking about."
Shinji sneered. "Oh, I think I do. You're trouble, Kakeru. Always have been."
The air was electric with tension.
Just as Shinji's taunts escalated,
Mr. Nakahara appeared, his eyes fixed intently on the scene.
"Ah, gentlemen, I trust the discussion is academic?"
His calm demeanor belied a piercing gaze, which lingered on Kakeru.
Shinji backed off, muttering under his breath.
Mr. Nakahara's eyes crinkled. "Takeru, Kakeru, walk with me."
As they strolled, Mr. Nakahara's tone turned low. "Kakeru, I see you're already... attracting attention."
Kakeru's expression remained guarded.
Mr. Nakahara continued, "I can help, if you're willing to trust me."
Takeru's curiosity piqued, he asked, "Trust you about what?"
Mr. Nakahara's smile hinted at secrets. "All in due time, Takeru."
They reached the school's east wing, where Mr. Nakahara's classroom was located.
"Kakeru, I have something for you," he said, producing a small, intricately carved box.
Kakeru's eyes narrowed, but he accepted the box.
Takeru's curiosity got the better of him. "Mr. Nakahara, what's your interest in Kakeru?"
Mr. Nakahara's smile faltered for a moment before he replied, "Just concerned about his well-being, Takeru."
Kakeru's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Mr. Nakahara's tone turned vague. "Nothing, nothing. Just... teacherly concern."
Takeru pressed on. "And what's with the gift?"
Mr. Nakahara chuckled. "A small token, that's all."
Kakeru stood, his expression uneasy. "Thanks, Mr. Nakahara, but we should go."
Takeru nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we've got classes."
As they excused themselves, Mr. Nakahara's eyes gleamed with intensity.
"Until next time, gentlemen..."
