We left the sanctuary behind, the lingering sense of peace dissolving into the harsh reality of the wilderness. Ashen and I were on the move again, following whatever clues we could piece together about the Wisteria Accond. The riddle still echoed in my mind, but as much as we tried to focus, there was no escaping the growing tension between us.
Ashen's steps were heavy beside me. I could sense his weariness, though he never complained. His injuries had mostly healed, but there was something else weighing on him—something darker. He hadn't mentioned the Void in a while, but I could feel its presence around him like a shadow clinging to the edges of his mind.
We traveled through dense forests, across rocky terrain, and over rivers that seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon. Each night, we would camp under the stars, and each night I would catch glimpses of Ashen fighting against something unseen. His eyes, once bright and shifting with emotion, were growing duller. Darker.
It started with small things—a tremble in his hands, a flicker of cold in his gaze. He became quiet, more withdrawn, as if battling some invisible force.
On the third day of our journey, we reached a clearing near the edge of a ravine. The air was still, too quiet. I sat by the fire, tending to our meal while Ashen stood off to the side, staring into the distance.
"You're different," I said softly, not looking up from the flames. I didn't want to push him, but the silence between us had become unbearable.
Ashen didn't respond at first. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides, his shoulders rigid with tension. Finally, he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's getting worse."
My heart sank. I had known something was wrong, but hearing him admit it made the reality harder to bear. I stood up, walking over to him, my hand resting on his arm. "What do you mean?"
"The Void..." He trailed off, his voice rough. "It's inside me, Kiera. It's always been there, but now... it's like it's trying to take over. I can feel it pulling at me. Whispering."
Fear crept into my chest, but I swallowed it down, keeping my voice steady. "You're stronger than it. You've fought it before."
Ashen shook his head, his jaw tightening. "I don't know if I can keep fighting it forever."
I took a step closer, forcing him to meet my eyes. "You're not alone in this, Ash. We'll figure it out. Together."
For a moment, his gaze softened, and I saw a flicker of the man I had come to care for. But just as quickly, it vanished, replaced by the haunted look that had been growing stronger with each passing day.
The fire crackled softly, casting long shadows over our small campsite. Ashen sat beside me, his back against a tree, but his eyes were distant, lost in some internal battle. I couldn't sleep, not with the weight of everything hanging between us.
I reached up to adjust the pendant around my neck, the one my grandmother had given me. It had always brought me comfort, a reminder of home. But tonight, it felt different. Warmer. I frowned, running my fingers over the smooth surface. It had never reacted to anything before, but now it felt almost... alive.
Ashen glanced at me, his eyes narrowing. "Your pendant... It's glowing."
I looked down, startled. He was right. A soft, faint glow pulsed from the center of the pendant, like a heartbeat. My pulse quickened. "I don't understand. This has never happened before."
Ashen leaned closer, his eyes locked on the pendant. "It's reacting to the Void."
My breath caught. "What do you mean?"
He shook his head, his expression unreadable. "I don't know. But it's connected somehow. Maybe... maybe it's part of the answer. The Wisteria Accond, the Void, your pendant—they're all connected."
I stared at the glowing pendant, feeling the weight of the revelation sink in. Could it be true? Could I really be tied to the Void—and to the ancient power of the Wisteria Accond?
The thought chilled me to the core.
