The tension in the outpost has been simmering all day, a quiet undercurrent that threads through every conversation, every glance. After last night, it's impossible to pretend things are normal. Soren and I have set our plan in motion, gathering a small group we can trust, but there's still a gnawing doubt in the pit of my stomach that won't let go.
The whispers of the Void—soft, seductive, lingering in the corners of my mind—only grow louder as the day drags on. And Ashen's words echo louder than the rest. The Void knows you now.
That knowledge weighs on me, like a stone pressing against my chest. I need answers. Real ones. And there's only one place I can get them.
I wait until night falls again. The outpost quiets, the sounds of soldiers bedding down and guards taking their posts muffling beneath the low hum of the forest beyond our walls. I should be asleep like everyone else, but I'm too restless, my thoughts running in circles, like a beast trapped in a cage.
I slip out of my quarters, moving through the shadows with practiced ease. My steps are silent on the dirt path, my breath barely a whisper in the cool night air. The trick is not to be seen, and to anyone who does spot me, to look like I belong. That's easier said than done, but I've had plenty of practice.
The guards at the western wall are changing shifts, their attention distracted. I time it perfectly, slipping through the gap and climbing over the stone wall in one fluid motion. My heart pounds, but I force myself to stay calm. One wrong move, one flash of suspicion, and this whole thing falls apart.
I make it out without anyone noticing, slipping into the dense cover of the trees. The moment I'm in the forest, it's like a different world—darker, quieter, the air thick with the scent of pine and earth. I pause, letting my eyes adjust, listening for any signs of movement. The wind rustles the leaves above, a whispering chorus that only adds to the unease coiling in my gut.
I don't have much time. If I'm gone too long, Soren or one of the others will notice, and I don't want to explain what I'm about to do. This is something I need to handle alone.
I pick my way deeper into the woods, each step taking me farther from the safety of the outpost. The path isn't well-trodden; it twists and turns through the undergrowth, barely a hint of a trail. I'm guided more by instinct than anything else, trusting the pull in my chest that tells me I'm going the right way.
After what feels like an eternity, I reach the clearing. The air here feels different—colder, sharper, like the forest is holding its breath. The moon hangs low, its light filtering through the branches to cast silver patterns on the ground. And there, standing in the middle of it all, is Ashen.
For a moment, I just watch. It's still, almost blending into the shadows, but I know it senses me. It stands taller than I am, about six feet, with a lithe, muscular build that speaks of both power and agility. Its skin is a deep charcoal gray, marked with swirling patterns that seem to shift and change in the moonlight. Its eyes, a striking shade of violet, turn to meet mine, and there's something almost... human in them. Something that both unsettles me and draws me in.
"You came," Ashen says, its voice low, carrying across the clearing like a soft breeze. There's no surprise in its tone, only a quiet sort of acceptance.
I step into the clearing, my hand hovering near the hilt of my dagger. I don't know what I'm doing out here, only that I need answers. "I need to know more about the Void," I say, keeping my voice steady, my gaze locked on its. "About what's really happening."
Ashen nods, and I swear there's a hint of relief in its eyes. "The Void has always existed, Kiera. It is a force of nature, a darkness that seeks to consume. But now... it is growing. Becoming stronger. And it's not by chance."
