The silence in the sanctuary was palpable, the ancient walls pressing in with an eerie, unspoken warning. Ashen stood by the door, his hand resting against the cold stone, his body tense and alert. We had rested as much as we could, but there was a sense of unease that lingered between us. The Void wasn't the only threat we had to worry about. The Nightborne were out there, and Soren was closing in.

I sat cross-legged on the ground, trying to focus on the riddle etched into my mind. The Wisteria Accond—the key to everything—still felt so distant, so out of reach. But we didn't have time to wait for answers anymore. The weight of that reality settled over me like a stone in my chest.

Ashen hadn't said much. He was distant, his eyes flickering between the door and the shadows that crept along the temple walls. I could see the exhaustion in his face, the way his body sagged with the strain of everything he had been through. I wanted to tell him to rest, to let me take over for a while, but I knew he wouldn't. Not with the threat of the Nightborne so close.

Suddenly, a sharp noise echoed through the temple—like the snap of a branch or the shuffle of footsteps on stone. Ashen's head whipped toward the sound, his body tensing instantly.

"Did you hear that?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

I nodded, my heart beginning to race. Something was wrong. The air had shifted, growing heavier, more oppressive. I could feel it—something, or someone, was coming.

Ashen moved closer to me, his hand brushing mine for the briefest moment. "Stay close," he murmured, his voice low and urgent. "And don't make a sound."

I swallowed hard and nodded, my pulse pounding in my ears. My hand instinctively went to the dagger at my side, gripping it tightly. The quiet between us was suffocating, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

Then, without warning, the door to the sanctuary burst open.

A dark figure stood in the doorway, cloaked in shadows. My breath caught in my throat as more figures followed, stepping into the dim light of the sanctuary. Their eyes glowed with an eerie, otherworldly light, their skin pale and marred with dark veins—Nightborne.

They had found us.

Ashen moved in front of me, his body blocking mine protectively. I could see the strain in his posture, the way his hand twitched toward the hilt of his sword. He was still weak from our escape, but there was no time to rest now. We were outnumbered, and I knew that if we didn't act fast, we wouldn't make it out of this alive.

"Run," Ashen whispered urgently, his voice strained.

But I didn't move. I couldn't leave him behind. Not now. Not ever.

The leader of the Nightborne stepped forward, his eyes locking on Ashen with a cruel smile. "So this is where you've been hiding," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "I'm disappointed, Ashen. You should have known better than to run."

Ashen didn't respond, his grip tightening on his weapon. The room seemed to shrink as the Nightborne closed in, their movements slow and deliberate, like predators toying with their prey.

The leader's gaze shifted to me, his eyes narrowing with interest. "And who's this?" he sneered, stepping closer. "Another human caught up in your pathetic rebellion?"

Ashen's body tensed, a low growl rumbling in his chest. "Stay away from her," he warned, his voice filled with barely controlled fury.

The Nightborne leader chuckled darkly. "Oh, I see. She's important to you, isn't she? How sweet." He moved faster than I could react, his hand shooting out to grab my wrist, yanking me toward him.

Ashen was on him in an instant.

With a snarl, Ashen swung his sword at the leader, the blade slicing through the air with deadly precision. The Nightborne barely managed to dodge, releasing me and leaping back, but Ashen didn't let up. Despite his weakened state, he fought with a ferocity I hadn't seen before, his movements fluid and precise as he took on the Nightborne.

The other Nightborne moved in, surrounding him. I could see the strain on Ashen's face, the way his muscles trembled with the effort of holding them off. He was outnumbered, but he didn't back down.

I lunged forward, my dagger flashing as I aimed for one of the Nightborne who had gotten too close. The blade found its mark, sinking into his side, but the Nightborne barely flinched. He turned on me, his eyes glowing with rage, and I barely had time to duck as he swung at me with a vicious snarl.

Ashen was there before the Nightborne could strike again, his sword slicing through the creature's arm in a spray of dark blood. He grunted in pain as another Nightborne slashed at him from behind, the blade cutting deep into his side.

"Ashen!" I screamed, panic rising in my chest.

But he didn't stop. Even as blood dripped down his side, even as the strength left his body, he kept fighting, his eyes blazing with determination. He was fighting for me. For us.

The leader of the Nightborne watched with a twisted smile, clearly enjoying the show. "You can't win, Ashen," he taunted. "You're too weak. Just give up, and maybe I'll make her death quick."

Ashen's eyes flickered with fury, but I could see the toll the fight was taking on him. His movements were slowing, his breathing labored. He couldn't keep this up much longer.

Suddenly, the leader lunged toward me again, his hand reaching for my throat. I tried to dodge, but he was too fast. His fingers closed around my neck, cutting off my air as he lifted me off the ground.

"Say goodbye, little human," he sneered, his grip tightening.

Ashen roared, the sound primal and filled with desperation. He raised his hand, dark energy swirling around him. The air crackled with raw magic as he unleashed a blast of energy that slammed into the Nightborne leader, sending him flying across the room.

The other Nightborne froze, momentarily stunned by the sheer force of the attack. Ashen dropped to one knee, his body trembling from the exertion. I could see the pain etched into his face, the way his eyes glazed over with exhaustion, but he didn't stop. He forced himself to his feet, stumbling toward me.

The leader of the Nightborne staggered to his feet, his face twisted in rage. "You think that will stop me?" he snarled, but there was a tremor of fear in his voice now. "I'll tear you apart for that."

Ashen didn't respond. He didn't have the strength to. His focus was entirely on me, on getting me out of here alive.

But before the Nightborne could strike again, Ashen's power surged one last time. He raised his hand, the dark energy swirling around him once more. With a final, desperate effort, he unleashed a wave of power that blasted the Nightborne away, sending them crashing into the walls of the temple.

The force of the blast knocked me off my feet, and I hit the ground hard, pain lancing through my side. I gasped, struggling to breathe as the world spun around me. But as the dust settled, I realized the Nightborne were gone. Ashen had saved me.

I tried to push myself up, my vision blurry, butmy body refused to move. The last thing I saw before everything went black wasAshen, collapsing to the ground beside me.
