"Ha," A small sigh escaped my lips as I laid my beaten-up kendama on the ground of the engawa I sat on.
I had played with this toy for countless hours to keep me from dying from boredom.
I was pretty good at it too.
After all, there's little to do in the countryside for a 6-year-old.
Living in the countryside was like living a different life.
The colors were far brighter than the city.
There wasn't as much grey compared to the city. Everything seemed to be wrapped in a nice, warm greenery.
Instead of the sound of cars, trains, and people going about their days. Your ears were filled with the sound of livestock nearby.
The air was far crisper as the low chirp of birds could be heard in the distance.
It was a much slower life out here.
Much calmer.
The people of my town accurately reflected the nature that surrounded them.
Everyone was far calmer and slower, not in a rush for their jobs or burdened by unnecessary emotions.
Most people here seemed to have that same warmth that the countryside had.
But, it wasn't the best place for a curious child like me.
Living here with just my Uncle and I.
The town's population was quite small.
So it was tough to find someone you didn't know.
The people were all very kind, owning their own little shops that were passed down by other family members.
But there were so many old people here. Which was a little annoying.
Perhaps because life moved slower out here.
However, there were still enough children who lived here that we could have a small school near the town.
Classes were very small though, and resources for the school were low.
But it worked.
It's probably because all the kids at my school are stupid annoying bums. That's why funding for the school was limited.
*Crunch*
My attention snapped to the area where the sound came from.
A familiar face approached me.
It was my Uncle. Fukumoto Asahi.
He usually returned home from work around this time.
He worked at a factory nearby every day of the week. Leaving early in the morning and coming back close to sundown.
Every so often he would get time off, but that was rare.
It seemed like work took a lot out of him. He always seemed tired and looked far older than his actual age.
Stress, maybe?
But he always tried to put that load to the side when he was with me.
As I met his gaze, he looked a little... different today.
"Akio, do I need to ask you about a message I just received from your teacher?"
"What message...?" I tried to play dumb.
