Later that night, Jane returns to his old home, where he lived his life with his wife and daughter. He drudges through the chores of opening doors and closing them, chucking the keys on the table and despairingly climbing the stairs up to his old bedroom where his family was brutally murdered.
He enters the bedroom. There's a mattress on the floor just below the Red John smiley face. Jane sighs as he lays down on the mattress, staring a thousand-yard stare into the abyss.
