Chapter 10

Just as Flowerpaw fell fast asleep into her soft comfy bed and dreamt about Pinepaw, A familiar-looking cat appeared in front of her. ''Spritsong! What are you doing here?''

The she-cat purred, ''Flowerpaw, you know you have great powers right? You need to be ready for a challenge. Evil is rising and you need to be ready to fight against it.''

Flowerpaw bristled, ''Then why won't you tell me who the apprentice is! If this cat is to help me, I've got to know who they are.''

''All in good time, little one,'' Spiritsong murmured, ''You'll get to know them soon. But first, you have to learn how to control your powers. I'll show you.'' As Flowerpaw followed Spiritsong into a clearing, she thought. I wonder what powers I have.

Spiritsong smiled, ''Flowerpaw, you have the same powers as me.'' Flowerpaw was shocked. Did she just read my mind? ''Yes, I did. One of my powers is to be able to hear others' thoughts. Also, I can sense danger before it happens. I'll tell you how to master these powers.''

Flowerpaw thought and sighed. It'll take forever before I can master these powers.

Spiritsong must have read her thoughts again cause she licked Flowerpaw's head and mewed, ''You can already sense danger. You did it with the fox, didn't you. The fox was actually near Earthclan and not Mistclan. But you still sensed it. I know you can do it.''

Flowerpaw purred and thought to herself. I guess I need more confident in myself. But, this is really cool! Flowerpaw followed Spiritsong into a clearing. ''Flowerpaw, you have the same power as me. You're able to know what others think and feel. You can also sense danger nearby.''

''How can I master these powers?'' Flowerpaw mewed. ''If you want to know what other cats or thinking or feeling, focus really hard until you feel like you're in someone else's head. Then concentrate and you will know. Let me show you. Think of something.''

I wish I was a normal cat who doesn't have to worry about things like these. Flowerpaw thought. be able to master these powers? Or will I fail to save my clan? However, she couldn't keep these thoughts to herself. Spiritsong must have read her mind because she licked the top of Flowerpaw's head.

''Of course you will. I'll teach you everything I know. Then you'll be able to save not only your clan, but all the clans. Now, let's begin.'' Flowerpaw nodded enthusiastically. ''To master your powers, you've got to focus really hard. Now try to see what I'm thinking.'' Flowerpaw tried to focus but every sound distracted her.

''I can't do this. It's too hard.'' Flowerpaw sighed, ''I guess I'm not ready yet.'' Spiritsong looked at her sympathetically. ''I know you might feel frustrated. But don't give up. It took me a while to master these powers too. I'm sure you can do it.''

''Thanks, Spiritsong.'' Flowerpaw purred. Spiritsong looked around, ''It's about time to wake up. I'll see you again tonight. Remember to try focusing. I have faith in you.'' ''Bye!'' Flowerpaw meowed as Spiritsong began fading away.

Flowerpaw woke up and heard Stemclaw calling for her, ''Flowerpaw, we're going hunting with Snowpaw. Get ready.'' Flowerpaw nodded, clearly tired.

As she was padding out of the apprentice den, Dewpaw blocked her path.

''What are you doing?'' Flowerpaw hissed, ''I need to go hunting.''

''You promised you would tell me something last night. And you still haven't told me.'' Dewpaw mewed softly.

''I'm busy. I'll tell you when I get back.'' Flowerpaw growled. Besides, I can't trust you now. You're meeting an Earthclan apprentice. She thought bitterly but did not dare say it out loud.

Flowerpaw saw Dewpaw's face fall and sighed, ''You should get on with your duties. I'll be back soon.'' Her gaze softened and began licking Dewpaw's head.

''Fine, Flowerpaw.'' Dewpaw sighed and padded away.

Relieved, Flowerpaw found Snowpaw awake and mewed, ''Snowpaw, you're hunting with us, right?''

Snowpaw yawned and mewed, ''Right. Tell Owlheart I'll be there soon.'' She then padded to the dirt place.

Flowerpaw padded by Snowpaw's side and began scenting for prey.

''Hey, Flowerpaw.'' Snowpaw whispered, not wanting their mentors to scold them for chatting.

''Yeah.''

''I actually heard your conversation with Deepaw yesterday.'' Snowpaw meowed sheepishly.

''You what?'' Flowerpaw mewed loudly. Stemclaw glared at her while she muttered a sorry.

''It's not what you think. I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was...'' Snowpaw tried to explain but was cut off by Flowerpaw.

''Please, don't tell anyone. Dewpaw would be punished if someone found out.'' Flowerpaw begged.

''I won't. I promise. But please talk some sense into your mouse-brained brother.'' Snowpaw whispered.

''I tried.'' Flowerpaw growled, ''But he won't listen.''

''Stop chatting you two and start looking for prey.'' Stemclaw warned.

By the time they got back from hunting, it was already midday.

''Flowerpaw, we'll be having battle training with Pinepaw and Snowpaw later. Take something on the freshkill pile and share it with them.'' Stemclaw mewed.

Flowerpaw nodded and brought some prey to Pinepaw and Snowpaw.

''Hi, Flowerpaw.'' Pinepaw purred while Snowpaw nodded politely.

While Flowerpaw and Pinepaw chatted, Snowpaw kept silent.

Something is wrong with Snowpaw. Flowerpaw thought. Maybe I can try and see what she's thinking.

Flowerpaw focused really hard and suddenly, she heard a tiny voice. This must be Snowpaw's thoughts. I did it!

Why did Dewpaw have to fall in love with a cat from Earthclan? Isn't being in Mistclan enough? Isn't his clanmates enough? Aren't I enough?

Flowerpaw sighed at the thought of Snowpaw's thoughts. I didn't know Snowpaw felt that way about Dewpaw.

Her thoughts were disturbed by Pinepaw, ''Snowpaw's acting kind of weird. Do you know something about it?''

Flowerpaw thought for a while and mewed, ''It's probably something personal. She can sort it out herself.''

''Are you sure? I don't like seeing her feeling upset.'' Pinepaw questioned.

"Neither do me. But she can tell us when she's ready." Flowerpaw comforted and wrapped her tail around Pinepaw.

"Thanks, Flowerpaw. You're the best friend ever." Pinepaw purred.

During battle training, Flowerpaw did really well but was still troubled by Snowpaw's thoughts.

Starclan, why do I have to have this power?
