Chapter 1

It was my first day of high school. I remember being nervous, and unsure of myself. But of course, that's how you usually start out, right?

Being a freshman, I had no idea how to navigate the school, whose name I cannot recall, so me and my best friend decided to team up. I believe her name was Fiona, but I'm not entirely sure. The details are very vague. Why don't I just call her Fiona, anyways? Fiona's a pretty name.

We met in the outdoor cafeteria, and found out that we had no two classes together. Disappointed, we left each other going our separate ways. Then I met HIM. He sat in the desk next to me my first period, and his name was, well, I'll get back to you on that later. He was so arrogant, his first words exactly to me were:

"Well, well, well. Look at what we have here. Hey babe." He winked at me.

I blushed furiously, not used to the attention given to me.

Filled with sudden courage, I replied seductively,"Well hey, you know, I do have a Tempurpedic, so..."

He laughed a deep, throaty laugh that I found extremely sexy as I cleverly smiled until he said, "Well, you know we could always ditch class..."

My clever smile turned into a horrified expression until I sat in my seat and stuck my nose up haughtily, sat straight in my seat, and said snootily, "Never."

Straightening my papers and adding a little 'huff' at the end. He grinned at me and at that moment the teacher walked in and we began our class.

It turned out I had every single class with him, and it annoyed the heck out of me. Plus, he would sit next to me in every class, making rude comments about the teacher or class every so often. It seems I gave the right reaction, though. Either stifling a giggle or smiling. During lunch he sat with me, and we talked.

"So how's your day going?" he asked casually.

Feeling shy, I nodded then looked down and started peeling my orange. We made small talk, and e was actually pretty good company.

"Hey! Rachel! Wait up!"

I was trudging warily down the old gravelly path to my worn down house when suddenly a boy about my age stopped beside me, wheezing like a fat man running for cake.

"What's up with you? Didn't you hear me call out your name?" he asked while raising an eyebrow up.

"Rachel?" I said and scrunched up my nose. I turned to face the boy and studied his features. Light brown hair, hazel eyes, fairly good looking. "My name is not Rachel."

"Oh yeah? I've been your best friend since you were born, I think I know your name," he smiled amusedly at me. I noticed that he had really cute dimples.

"No,no. Rachel isn't my name," I said again sternly.

"Then what is your name?" he asked, looking dazed.

I cocked my head to the side and thought . . . what was my name? Peony, Layla, Amanda? No.

I could not recall my name at all. Was something wrong with me? As I stood there thinking I noticed the boy waiting patiently for me. That was sweet.

"Nevermind," I said, forgiving him. "My name probably is Rachel anyways."

"Your name IS Rachel," he said persistently. I sighed and gave in.

"Fine," I said poutily,"I guess my name is Rachel."

Rachel. Ra-chel. Why wasn't it something prettier, like...Victoria? Nah, too fancy. Jenny? Nope. How about...ugh, I've got nothing. Rachel it is.

"I wanted to ask you something, Rachel," he said shyly, looking at the ground.

"What is it," I thought for a moment,"Christopher?"

He looked confused at first, but I guess he realized his name WAS Christopher! Aha! I was right!

"Well, you see, we've known each other for a while, right?" I stared into his eyes and nodded. "I was thinking that, well, um, we could go out?"

My eyes widened and I stood there speechless. The memories came back. Me and Christopher playing in the sandbox while our mothers talked and watched us fondly. Christopher helping me ride my bike without training wheels, and comforting me when I fell and scraped my knee. Christopher and me walking into kindergarten together, holding hands. Then those memories vanished.

Still, for some reason it didn't seem right, him going out with me. It was as if the fates were urging me to say no. So I did. He looked at me shocked and walked away sadly. I didn't understand why he was so sad, everyone gets rejected, right?
