We were sitting on the mattress in my bedroom. I was mortified by what had happened. I pressed the ice against his cheekbone and thanked God he hadn't lost consciousness.
"I'm so sorry, especially for what he said to you. My brother is a person...," I tried to find the right word, difficult when the subject was Damon. "Good, in his strange way. I'm sure he'll understand," I hoped sincerely.
He took the ice pack from my hands and set it on the nightstand. "I believe you, but... Next time remind me to kiss you while we're still in the car. Now what do I say when I go back to work?" He laughed.
"I don't know, maybe... that you were attacked by a rabid squirrel," I laughed and then gave him a friendly smack on the good side of his face.
"Are you making fun of me?"
He grabbed me by the waist and tossed me onto the bed like a wrestler. "No, please—" I started laughing, but in no time he was on top of me, holding my arms above my head.
"Apparently, you didn't like the squirrel idea," I couldn't keep quiet, and I guess that drove him crazy in a good way.
"Not at all," he said, leaning his face closer to mine. But before our lips could meet, I gave him a little knee jab to his side, and with a swift move, I reversed the situation. Now I was sitting on top of him, holding him down with one hand on his chest. I knew it was easy for him to flip the situation again, but he seemed to enjoy this... position.
We heard a soft cough coming from the entrance of the room. We turned our faces to see Elena, trying to get our attention.
"I think I'd better leave you two alone," Joseph said.
"Yes, you're probably right," I said quickly, getting off the bed and looking at my best friend. Always perfect timing, Elena.
"See you," he said, giving me a quick peck on the lips.
I smiled at him as he quickly headed for the door, said goodbye to Elena, and disappeared from view. My best friend closed the door and looked at me with her jaw literally dropped.
"So, he was the mysterious guy?" she said incredulously with a grin on her face. I knew I had won her approval.
"Yes, isn't it amazing?!" I exclaimed, starting to bounce energetically on the bed.
She rushed over to me and pulled me by the arm (with vampire strength), making me sit on the mattress. Sometimes I forgot she was now one of them.
"Why didn't you tell me right away? After all the comments Caroline and I made about him in front of you... And then during the visit... That's what those looks were about. Damn Odette, why didn't you say anything?! I get Damon and Stefan, but me, your best friend!"
"I know, I'm sorry, but he didn't tell anyone either. We rarely go out, so it's not an easy situation," I replied, trying to make her understand it was a choice made for our own good.
"I understand, you're absolutely right."
"But you know what? I'm glad, because I've finally gotten this weight off my chest," I said, flopping down on the mattress.
"So am I. Damn, the most charming doctor in Mystic Falls! Do you know if he has a brother?" she joked, teasing me, even though she already had "a brother."
"Oh, stop it!" I laughed, throwing a pillow at her face, and we both burst into giggles like a couple of idiots.

"Good morning," I said as I walked into the kitchen. Damon ignored me, while Elena couldn't help but smile at me.
"Good moorning," she sang out cheerfully.
