Dr. Teeth, still known as Junior at that time, walked out of the college building with a sense of emptiness hanging over him. His family was huddled together at the base of the steps, congratulating themselves more than him. Mama Teeth, dressed to the nines, was holding court, telling everyone who would listen about her son's bright future as the next "Doctor of Teeth." She'd even told him to go say goodbye to his "dentist friends," but the truth was, Junior hadn't made any. The only person he could even consider a friend here was Odyssey, the school counselor who had helped him survive these grueling years. She had known Floyd too, back in the day when the three of them were just kids hanging around the neighborhood.
He gave a quick nod to Odyssey, who offered him a small, knowing smile. Then he turned and walked away from the crowd. As he made his way toward the curb, he saw a figure leaning casually against a lamppost. At first, he didn’t recognize the man with the glasses and the full mustache. But when the stranger grinned and said, "Haha! Hey, man!" it clicked.
"Floyd?" Gerald stammered, eyes widening.
"In the flesh," Floyd chuckled, stepping forward. His voice was the same, but everything else had changed. He was more rugged, more world-weary. The glasses and mustache made him look like a stranger, but those eyes, always gleaming with some hidden joke, were unmistakable.
"Man, I didn't recognize you," Dr. Teeth said, still in shock. His gaze lingered on Floyd's face, taking in every new detail. "What happened to you?"
Floyd shrugged, the carefree motion disguising the weight of years. "Long story. I got a Purple Heart... and a dishonorable discharge. It's a mess, but I'm still here."
They didn’t have time for a deep conversation. Instead, Floyd reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, battered harmonica. "Remember this?" he said, tossing it to teeth. "Kept it all these
years."Dr teeth caught it, his eyes misting over as memories flooded back. Without a word, he raised the harmonica to his lips and began to play. Floyd pulled out a guitar he had slung across his back and strummed along. The melody was a rough, improvised mix of blues and jazz, but it felt like home. Right there on the curb, amidst the swirling noise of the city, they had their mini jam session. It was as if time had stood still, and they were once again those two boys who believed in music more than anything else.
But the magic was shattered when Mama Teeth marched over, Daddy Teeth trailing behind her with his hands stuffed in his pockets. Her eyes blazed as she looked at Floyd, then at her son. "Junior, what in God's name are you doing? You're a doctor now, not some street musician!"
Floyd smirked and opened his mouth to speak, but Mama Teeth cut him off, jabbing a finger in his direction. "And you! You have no right to drag him back into this nonsense. Junior is going to take over the family practice, become the best damn dentist this city's ever seen!"
"Come on, Mama," Dr teeth started, but she wasn’t listening. She grabbed his arm, pulling him away from Floyd.
"Don't 'Mama' me! Get in the Bus. We’re leaving," she commanded.
Dr teeth glanced at Floyd, their eyes locking for a moment. Floyd gave him a small nod. "Catch you later, man," he said quietly.
"Yeah," Dr teeth replied as he was dragged away by his mother. Floyd watched them go, his heart heavy but his spirit not yet broken. He'd found his doc again, and that was a start.
