Chapter One: Avani

"Avani, get up!" My mom yelled, flicking my light on. I hated that shit with a passion, that was probably the quickest way to piss me off in the morning. Luckily, I was in a good mood because it's the first day of my junior year and I was too excited. I just knew this year was going to be a good one.

I went down to handle my morning hygiene before my bighead as brother got in there, so I could be ready by the time he was. Since I didn't have my license yet, he dropped me off at school in the mornings. I didn't mind riding the bus, but I didn't feel I should have to since he was driving and my parents just bought him a new car. I would just deal with his mouth so I didn't have to take the bus.

"Avani and Amari! I'm probably not coming home after work, so I left some money on the kitchen table for something to eat when y'all get home," my mom said before she left.

She worked as an ultrasound technician and even though it's only Monday, I know her days are hectic as fuck and the job itself wears her out. Even with all the stress she endures, my mom looks good for her age. She was nearing fifty, but didn't look a day over thirty. The saying, Black don't crack, does hold some truth.

As soon as my brother pulled in front of my school, the first person I saw was my best friend, Christian walking toward the side entrance we usually met up at. I met Christian when we were in 7th grade and we've been close since. That's my best friend and everybody knew it. When you saw him, I wasn't too far behind and vice versa. We met up with our other friend, Lathan a little while after and I smiled now that I had both of my besties by my side.

We split up shortly after we got together and headed to our classes. My homeroom and first period were cool, but I was ready to get to my fourth period class since it was with both of my best friends. It was every other day, but I was still happy about it.

When I got to my History class, it was loud as fuck already. I saw a few people I knew and already had the feeling this class was going to be interesting. I made my rounds speaking to everyone, asking how summers were and then I found a seat perfect for me. Not too far in the back and not too close to the front. I sat my bag on the floor next to me and when I looked up, I looked into the eyes of a boy I had never seen before. He was definitely new.

Syrus Williams. He was 6'4", had a fresh cut with waves that would make anyone sick, and he had a set of gold fronts in his mouth. He had on a pair of true religion jeans, a fresh white t-shirt, and a pair of Jordan 11's on his feet. And he had some big feet on him. You know what they say about those...

After I checked him out for longer than I should have, I quickly turned away so he wouldn't think I was obsessed or try to approach me. I guess it didn't work, though, because he waltzed right over to my seat.

"Somebody sitting here next to you, beautiful?" Now why would he call me that. He was so damn cute, and his deep voice was even cuter.

"No, well not yet," I replied sassily.

"Well, whoever thought about this seat is shit out of luck 'cause it's mine now. You aight with that?"

"Yeah, I guess so," I chuckled. I hid my blush as best as I could, but damn he was so fine.

The remainder of the period was free just because it was the first day, but I knew tomorrow we would be straight to it. That also made Syrus take full advantage of talking to me. He was asking so many questions and not letting me return the favor. I see my future husband wanted to be a mystery, but I would soon find out everything I needed to know about him. Just when I wanted to ask him something, the bell rang and it was time for my next class.

Say, I'm new here as you can see and I don't really know my way around. Can you tell me where this class is?" I grabbed his schedule and skimmed over it quickly to see if we had anymore classes together. Sadly we didn't, but at least I get to see this handsome face every morning, so it's not all bad.

"Yeah, B27 is on the next floor. Just take those stairs down the hall and when you get to the top, make a right. Go all the way down until you see the bathrooms, make a left, and then it's going to be on your left side."

"I appreciate that, ma," he said, winking, showing his gold fronts. He knew exactly what he was doing but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of knowing he looked damn good while doing it. Besides, I probably wasn't and wouldn't be the only girl he's spitting game to and flirting with. I got ready to head to my next class so I could see my friends. I loved that we had a class together and I was going to take advantage of it.

The rest of the day flew by and before I knew it, the dismissal bell rang loudly. I was happy I didn't have to ride the bus after school either since my dad picks me up everyday and I was thankful for that. I'll be glad when I finally get my license in a few months, though so I can drive myself. As I waited by the doors for my dad, I heard Christian's loud mouth approaching.

"Girl, let me tell you about my study hall period. I got the shit everyday and it's full of niggas on the football team. But, you better get your boy Chance before I fuck him up. He has one more time to call me gay and I'm tagging that ass."

"Now you know me and Chance are just friends, but I'll say something to him," I laughed.

A lot of people thought Christian was gay, but I don't know, I just didn't get the impression. We've been friends for so long and he picked up on some of my language over time, but that didn't mean he was gay. I wouldn't care either way if he was, though. He would still be my best friend regardless of his sexuality.

I turned around for a split second before I said something else to him and out of the corner of my eye, to my surprise, I saw Syrus give Christian dap. I know this wasn't the same friend Christian said was moving here. Isn't this about a bitch.

A text from my dad letting me know he was outside brought me from my thoughts, so I told Christian I would call him later and just waved to Syrus.

When my dad pulled in front of my house, I was ready to go in, relax, and get ready for the next day. Me and my dad said our goodbyes and he handed me some money for me and my brother, letting me know he would see me tomorrow.

The first day was good, and I was looking forward to the party at the end of the week. I called Christian and while I talked to him, I checked my social media and saw a message on Facebook from Syrus. I scrolled through his page for a split second, then went to my messages to see what he said.

"Christian, guess who sent me a friend request and a message on Facebook," I said with a laugh. I don't know why I found it so funny, but I wasn't expecting him to look me up on social media and send me a message, especially not this soon.

"Who? Don't tell me it's Syrus."

"Yeah. How'd you figure?"

"Because I saw the way he looked at you when he walked to the side entrance to meet me and Lamar. And he was all up in my phone when I was on Facebook. I don't think it would be a good idea for y'all to start talking." Where did that come from?

"We're just in the same History class and I didn't even know he was the friend you were talking about until I seen the way y'all interacted after school. I'm not worried about him in the slightest," I lied. "Besides, I'm sure I wasn't the first girl he approached and I won't be the last."

"I'm just saying. That's my brother and all, but I just don't think it would be good or end well if y'all were to end up being more than friends."

"I'm not worried about that and neither should you. We're just in the same class."

"If you say so. I'm just ready for that party on Friday. I already know it's gon' be lit as fuck!" he screamed in my ear.

I was just glad he changed the subject. I didn't want the entire conversation to be about Syrus when nothing was happening for us to even talk about. I mean, if we did end up talking, would it really be such a bad thing?

I continued talking to Christian for a little while longer, forgetting that I even had a message from Syrus. Deciding to see what he said, I opened it and it read:

Syrus W: I didn't get a chance to say anything to u after school, beautiful. Hope u gon' be at the party Friday.

Exiting out of the message, I didn't even reply. I would just see what he's talking about if I do end up seeing him at the party.
