"Okay, spill it," I say to Megan, bracing myself for whatever she will say.
"Nope, you will find out soon enough."
The tone in her voice makes me fear for the existence of the world as we know it.
Megan shoves me to the kitchen. "Go on, go make those Cherry Bombs. I see you later."
Megan keeps pushing me and I almost stumble into the kitchen. Jerry is already busy. I'm a bit worried, because he's singing in curses again.
Jerry's not good with pressure. And 'not good' is an understatement. His preparation is usually very thorough, but if things go wrong, hell breaks loose. And singing songs, replacing the normal lyrics with curses, is one of the signs he's about to break down.
I sneak around as quietly as possible, I don't want to disturb him. I don't think he's going to throw stuff today, but you never know.
He's melting the chocolate, something he will never leave to us. It's a too delicate job, he always tells us. I stay as quiet as possible, and rinse the cherries.
The scent of melting chocolate is filling the kitchen and Jerry is mixing the thick fluid with some spices. It makes my mouth water. This is one of his best recipes, people always come back for it. When he is finally done, he puts the trays in the fridge. The waiting begins.
I start to clean up, again. A nervous Jerry is a messy Jerry and the stove looks like a tsunami of chocolate came along. When the biggest mess is gone, I hear someone's ringtone.
Jerry picks up his phone. Within a couple of seconds his face is as white as a sheet. "I'm on my way." He says.
Wait, what is he saying? I fold my arms and stare at him.
"Elise, can I ask you one more favor?" a nervous smile glides over Jerry's face.
"Ask away," I say. I fear for what is coming.
"Could you please deliver those Chocolate Cherry Bombs? There's something wrong with my order of special Brazilian beans and I have to solve things now." He's twisting the towel he's holding in his hands.
"Hell no!" Is what I want to say, but of course I keep my mouth shut, because that's what I always do.
"Thanks, you're an angel!" Jerry hands me the adres of mr. famous movie star. "You have to let them cool for another hour. Then they should be fine."
"I didn't even say yes, but okay, it's fine! Go save your precious beans!"Annoyed I wave Jerry away. The annoyance must be dripping from my face.
"Aaw, that's so sweet. Dan's not that bad, you know?" A smile curves his lips.
"What is that all about?" I scowl.
"I'm not blind, Elise. Just enjoy the attention. It might be good to get your nose out of those textbooks. Okay, I have to run!" And with those words he almost runs from the kitchen.
I kick at a chair. Why are Megan and Jerry making a fuss about that guy? It's not like he's saving the world or something... Why did he think I was a doctor when I obviously work here? He's just an arrogant guy who probably thinks I'm going to drool all over him, just because he's famous. And when I give in to him and his beautiful eyes, he will probably dump me after a week. Gaah, those eyes... I'm overthinking this way too much, like I always do. I just have to deliver those stupid cherry bombs. What is the worst thing that could happen?
I jump up when my phone buzzes. It's Megan.
"Hey stupid, open the door!"
"What door? I'm still at the lunchroom."
I hear Megan sigh. "That's the door I mean. Jerry locked it when he ran away."
"Give me a second."
When I walk through the lunchroom I see Megan with some huge suitcase. I open the door. "I didn't know you were going on a trip, where are you going?"
Megan grins wickedly. "We are going to a fancy party."
"We are?" I'm all confused. I've never heard her talking about a party, until now.
Megan stares at me. "Sometimes I wonder why they think you are the smart one. Now help me with this suitcase." It's heavy and I wonder what's inside.
"I still have no clue what you're talking about."
She opens the suitcase. It contains a great deal of her party dresses, makeup and several pairs of high heels.
"Listen, we have to be quick. I don't know how long it will take for Jerry to find out I lured him away. We're going to deliver those Chocolate Cherry Bombs in our best party outfits and we will get invited for Dan's party."
I shake my head. "That's your plan? No. Not going to happen. Dan only saw me once. This is so not going to work. What were you thinking, Meg? You lied to Jerry about coffee. He will be so mad at you."
"If you don't tell him, he will never find out." She smirks. "And what else are you going to do, Eli? It's Saturday evening. You're not going to study, are you?"
I frown. What's wrong with that? "Well..."
"No Eli, we're going out tonight and we're going to have a good time. And that's a threat!" She starts to take out some of the dresses. Most of them are not my taste, they're impractical and too tight. "And a promise!" Meg adds.
She holds several dresses in front of me and eventually hands over a simple black one. "Put it on, so I can do your make up and hair."
I groan, but I do as she tells me. The dress is sexy, but not as revealing as the one Meg wears. She wears a shiny golden dress, that's barely covering her thighs. I'm glad the one she gave me ends just above my knees and covers at least half of my chest. When I'm done changing clothes, she pats on a chair. "Sparkle time!" she says.
"Please don't over do it," I beg her.
She grins wickedly. I'm doomed. Why am I going through with this? I decide that I don't care. In a few weeks I will be somewhere else anyway. With that in mind I try to relax, although it's hard when my best friend is tickling me with her makeup brushes. When she's done she hands me over some killer heels.
"Really?" I say, thinking of all the terrible injuries they can cause.
"Really," Meg says. "What's the worst thing that could happen?"
I rub my head. "A zombie apocalyps and I can't run away, because I'm wearing those things. And then they eat my braaaaains." I dramatically grab her head at this point.
"Mind the hair. It took me at least an hour to get it like this." Meg pats her red curls, when I release her. "Okay, you're almost ready," she says while she combs my hair. I take some shaky steps. These heels and I are not going to be friends. I make it to the bathroom without any accidents and I stare into the giant mirror. Megan truly is an artist and I look amazing. She didn't overdo the makeup, it looks natural.
"And?" she says.
"Wow, Meg, just wow."
"Good! Let's go. It's time for our special delivery."
