Oscar collapsed onto the floor, his chest rising and falling rapidly, sweat coating every inch of his body. He had just finished an intense workout outside, baked by the heat of the English sun in July. Not his smartest move to workout outside, he thought.

He closed his eyes, beginning to relax, when he was rudely interrupted by his phone ringing.

“Hi Oscar, it’s Lauren from the office. Andrea wants to have a meeting with you today if possible, any chance you’d be able to make it in?”

Oscar found it weird, unscheduled meetings were not a common aspect within the busy team, but he shrugged it off.

“Uh yeah, I can be there in an hour?”

“That’s perfect, thanks Oscar.”

Oscar groaned, willing himself to rise from his sweaty exercise mat before having a shower and heading for the meeting.

As he pulled up to the MTC, he couldn’t help but notice how quiet it was. Sure it was the first week of summer break, and everyone in the team was entitled to a break, but something was missing.

Or more so, someone.

Lando wasn’t here, Oscar noticed. He laughed it off. Even after years with McLaren, punctuality was far from Lando’s strong suit. He locked up the car and headed inside.

He was greeted by Lauren at the front desk. “Hey Oscar, you can head up to Zak’s office, they’ll meet you up there.”

“Perfect thanks. Should I call Lando and find out his ETA?” Oscar joked, it definitely wouldn’t have been the first time Oscar had to call Lando to tell him he was late.

“No that’s not necessary. This meeting is just for you, Andrea and Zak.” She replied.

Oscar’s stomach dropped, and only one thought raced through his mind.

McLaren have decided to let him go.

“Oh. Thanks Lauren.” Oscar said softly before heading upstairs.

Sweat began to gather on his palms. He felt sick.

He thought about his recent performances. Sure, 2024 wasn’t working out entirely in his favour. He had 3 DNFs in the last 6 races, 2 of which weren’t even his fault. But he also had 2 podiums, and surely that counted for something?

He couldn’t help but think about how harshly McLaren had treated Daniel, breaking his contract, sacking him, and bringing in Oscar instead.

What goes around comes around? Oscar wondered to himself. Before he knew it, he was outside the office. He took a deep breath to compose himself before lifting his hand and rapping on the door.

“Come on in.” Zak’s voice called from the other side.

“Hey Oscar man, how are ya?” Zak got up, shaking Oscar’s hand, with Andrea following suit.

Oscar sat down into the chair, trying to relax, but the ambiguity of the situation posed a difficulty to do so.

“Is everything okay?” Oscar asked.

“Oscar, we wanna talk to you about your position within the team-“

Shit.

Well Oscar. It was now or never. He either had to sit there, take it on the chin and end up unemployed, or fight for his position.
