So basically, a long time ago, Adora and Catra got married. Then, Catra got pregnant by Adora (don't ask.), but unfortunately, Catra died from child birth, making Adora a single mother and a mafia boss. Adora is still stressed out, depressed, dealing with anger issues, and past experiences with stuff you will find out later. But, she has a kid so she has to try. Luckily, Adam came back in town as soon as he heard the news of Catras passing and Glimmer & Bow and the others are being helpful.
(In case you don't want to wait for what Adora has been through, don't read it. Now.)
So basically what Adora has been through: Since about elementary school, she has been bullied very bad (like worse than Shadow Weaver treating Catra in the show.) Meaning, physically, mentally, and emotionally. And guess why? All because her parents were mafia bosses. Word got out to the students, Adoras parents are mafia bosses cus they didn't really do a good job of hiding it and most of the kids thought it was a smart idea to bully Adora for showing emotions cus Mafia bosses or up-coming mafia bosses are supposed to "not show emotion" or whatever.
So yea, in a summary, Adora got bullied for showing emotions as a up-coming mafia boss.
