Nya:
The day was finally here.
The day that I'd pack up and leave without my brother being able to stop me.
The day that I'd leave my family and friends behind to attend Ignacia University in my hometown.
The day that I move in with my boyfriend.
"You ready to go?" Jay asks, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah."
"You said goodbye to everybody?"
"Not to everybody, but there's nothing I can do about that." My final day before going away for a couple of years, and my parents won't be here to see it.
Jay understands that because he also lost his parents.
Granted, he has other parents, but that doesn't take from his loss.
Ignacia is close enough that I can visit every weekend if I wanted to, but too far to make the drive every morning.
"It's okay, Nya. In a way, they're coming with us."
I groan. "I know you're being sweet, but that is one of the cheesiest things you can hear from a movie." I pat his head sympathetically. "Let's go."
"Did you say goodbye to Sunny?" He crosses his arms and raises an eyebrow.
Due to the dorm policy there, no pets are allowed, no exceptions.
I nod. "And I gave her a treat. I said goodbye to everyone, I have all my stuff packed, and I gave Kai solid instructions for taking care of Sunny. I'm ready to go."
"Are you sure? I think you're forgetting something."
"Jay, I will tackle your keys from you and tape you to the front seat if that's what it takes to get us there. What could I possibly be forgetting?"
"That." He points behind me at my old apartment building.
I have to keep telling myself that Kai won't be alone. He'll have Sunny and Skylor, too.
I turn back to him, entirely confused. "Wha-" My eyes widen because the minute I turn back to look at him, his lips are on mine.
My eyes flutter shut, and I gladly return the kiss.
If there's ever a person trying to figure out the secret to time travel, they just haven't found the right person yet.
Kissing Jay felt like it could have been hours, minutes, or even a few seconds. There is no time, no brother running away from the view outside the window, no stress. It's simply happiness, adoration, and passion.
He pulls back first, and I open my eyes to see his goofy grin.
"Now you're ready."
"You couldn't have waited 'til we were at the dorm?" I raise my brow, but my smile is unconcealable.
"Nope. Also, I felt kind of weird with Kai watching us leave, so I figured that'd get rid of him."
I laugh. "That would do it. Now, seriously, we don't want to get there at midnight, and we still have to stop at your parent's."
Nervous as I am, having Jay with me will make everything better.
Kai:
"They grow up so fast." I remind myself to keep from going out there and yelling at Jay for kissing my baby sister.
I'm having a lot of second thoughts right now.
Maybe I should've pushed harder for her to go to a closer university instead.
Maybe I shouldn't've let her stay in a dorm with her boyfriend.
If it's just the two of them... alone... together...
No, no, no, Kai! They slept out together at Jay's place, and nothing happened. Why would things be different now?
I mean, sure, they're actually dating now, and sure, Jay's parents aren't seconds away...
I think I'm going to be sick.
Looking out the window, I see that the two finally took off, but instead of Jay's blue car, I see a familiar red car parked two spaces down.
I'm about to go outside to greet her, but Skylor's already sitting down on the couch, staring at me.
Or rather, staring at a part of me.
She stands up and walks over, pulling me into a long kiss.
I pull away almost immediately. "Hey, Sky. How's it going?"
She frowned and crossed her arms. "What was that?"
"What was what?" I play dumb.
"You know what. I thought you'd want to take advantage of the empty apartment."
"Well, I did... but I got in my head about Nya and Jay, and eughhhh," I shudder visibly. "I don't want to think about it."
She nods. "So, do you want to watch a movie instead?"
"What movie?"
"Have you seen 50 First Dates?"
"Sounds like the story of my life." I sigh. "Sure."
Skylor shakes her head. "Believe me, it isn't."
She puts it on, and we take a seat on the couch.
. . .
"Okay, so that was definitely not the story of my life." There was a happy ending, but not in the usual 'no more problems' way. She still couldn't remember.
"You know, Jay would do that for Nya, no matter how much it hurt him to see her like that."
I smile a bit at that. "Nya made the right choice this time, that's for sure." I smile lopsidedly at her. "And I'd do it for you."
"Mmm.. no, depending on when I lost my memory, I probably wouldn't have believed you no matter what."
I chuckle. "You're probably right." I pull her into a hug. "Thank you for keeping me company."
"You sound like an old grandpa." She pulls away and winks. "But you're welcome."
I walk her out to her car, and she drives away.
I go join Sunny back inside and grab her leash. "According to the schedule, I'm supposed to take you to the beach now."
This will take some getting used to.
