"What?" Evie asks, tilting her head slightly, her smile faltering for just a moment as she processes what Ana had said. There's a brief flicker of confusion in her eyes, her expression shifting from playful to confused."Mamacita, it's just... I wanted to try out my Spanish on someone," Ana stammers, forcing a smile as she tries to play it off.
"I'm bilingual," she adds, her voice shaky, trying to mask the overwhelming emotions swirling inside her.
"Oh, sí, sí. ¿Cómo te llamas?" Evie asks with a playful smile, her tone light and teasing.
Ana blinks, still confused and struggling to process what's happening. Seeing her mother alive, speaking to her, feels surreal. "Repeat... again?" she stammers.
"What's your name? 'Cause it doesn't seem like you're from here. Especially with your clothes—it's cute, but weird," Evie says, motioning toward Ana's outfit.
Ana looks down at herself, suddenly aware of how out of place she seems. Her modern clothes starkly contrast with the bright, over-the-top 80s outfits everyone else is wearing.
Neon colors, over-the-top accessories, and big hair surround her. She glances back at Evie, who still watches her with a curious smile.
"Uh... Ana," she finally replies, her voice uncertain. "Where... exactly am I?"
"You're at Camp Lovewell!" Evie says with a light laugh. "And no, it's not some love cult! Though... let's just say l've had the love experience," she adds with a playful wink.
"Camp... Lovewell?" Ana repeats, her mind racing. None of this made sense, but somehow, she couldn't help but feel drawn to this place, to her mother, and to the mystery surrounding it all.
"Everybody from school is here—it's the most popular camp," Evie says with a grin, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"Oh... okay... wow, maybe lay off the buffet. It looks like you're gaining a baby in there," Ana blurts out, her eyes landing on Evie's noticeably swollen stomach, which looked almost unnaturally round, like a bouncy house.
Evie's smile falters for a second, and she lets out a forced laugh. "Yeah, it's not exactly the buffet," she says, her tone still light but with an odd tension beneath it. She places a hand on her stomach, her gaze flicking away from Ana for a brief moment.
"Wow... what's her damage?" Evie mumbles to herself, while rubbing her stomach. She quickly forces a smile back onto her face, trying to help this homeless girl.
Holding out her hand, Evie extends it toward Ana and helps her up. "I'm actually pregnant, you know, so I'm not fat. I'm F.A.T—Fabulous and Tubular, basically what you homeless people say," Evie snaps, her voice edged with pain physically and emotionally.
She turns away, visibly upset. The cheerful facade drops, and she cries to herself while walking away, leaving Ana stunned and more confused than ever.
"Pregnant... oh wait, that's me?" Ana says, her realization dawning on her as she processes Evie's words.
"I must have a big head then. Oh my god, why am I insulting my mom! Why am I insulting myself!" she exclaims, hitting her own head with her hands in frustration earning her some looks.
Ana quickly regains her composure and starts following Evie, determined to catch up. As she moves through the camp, she stops abruptly when she notices Evie approaching a man who looks familiar—her dad.
He appears exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and a cigarette dangling from his fingers. The sight of him, looking worn and disheveled, contrasts sharply with the vibrant surroundings of the camp. Ana hesitates, unsure whether to approach or remain hidden, her emotions a turbulent mix of confusion, concern, and disbelief.
Ana watches as a heart-broken Evie approaches her father. Her dad, noticing her distressed state, drops his cigarette and quickly crushes it under his boot. "Hey, hey, are you okay?" he asks, his voice filled with concern. Evie, visibly upset, rests her head on his shoulder, seeking comfort.
He gently holds her head and keeps asking her what's wrong, his concern evident as he tries to soothe her. Ana just watches from the background, not sure how she's suppose to react.
"I can't keep doing this," Evie rants, her voice trembling with emotion.
"I feel so fat. My parents haven't found out, but they'll hate me. I don't care, but I do." She buries her face deeper into Ana's father's shoulder, her words a mix of frustration and fear.
"Hey, hey," her dad says gently, trying to calm Evie down. "The only person you should care about is you and whoever is in your stomach. Nobody else. I get you're popular, but you're not different from who you were before this." His voice is soothing and reassuring, as he tries to ease her anxiety thoughts.
"You're hella cool, even if I smoke," her dad says with a chuckle, making both Evie and himself laugh. Ana smiles for a moment, the smile quickly fades quickly still feeling like something was wrong.
"You know, you're going to be a good father," Evie says, her voice sincere. Her father mumbles, "I'm not," as he looks down at his shoe, aware of how others perceive him and worried about the judgment he faces.
He hopes his child wouldn't see him in such a negative light. Ana frowns, feeling a pang in the side of her stomach as she sees him in the same light he wished he wasn't.
As Ana watches the two of them hugging, she smiles to herself, finding a rare moment of comfort and happiness watching them. Seeing her dad being caring and supportive, without being over the top or neglectful, just brings a smile to her for some reason. She wishes he could have shown her the same care and understanding the same way he did for her mom in her own time, feeling a pang of longing for the kind of relationship she's witnessing now.
"Oh my... hurry up! You're going to miss the sit-around-the-campfire!" a hippie girl calls out as she runs up to Ana. Her jumping out of nowhere startled Ana, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground once more. The unexpected jolt pulls Ana out of her thoughts, as she snaps her herself back to reality and turns to the hippie rolling her eyes.
"For a hippie, I'd want to punch you in your nose," Ana mutters, as she pushes herself up. The hippie girl shakes her head with a giggle, seemingly unbothered by Ana's reaction. "Have a good time, find your soulmate, and express the good vibes," she says cheerfully. "Just like Madonna says, 'Like a Virgin for the very first time.'" She winks playfully before turning to skip to the campfire.
"This is going to be a living hell," Ana says with a groan, looking up at the sky and closing her eyes for a second before hearing a whisper in her ear making her open her eyes and look around to see it was no one around her somehow.
(Author's Note: Sorry, if these are short I'm trying to build the relationship of Ana and her parents before we meet anyone or go to chaos but it will happen soon.)
