Amelie
Economics homework is such a drag. I'm sprawled out on my bed with sheets surrounding me, studying for the test which I'm going to ace. Yes, I'm cocky, what about it?
My phone rings, breaking the music that was playing for my concentration. I take a peek and see that mum is calling me, my eyes light up and I grab my phone.
My mother, Teal Astor, is my absolute role model in life. She's everything I want to be and everything I've worked so hard to become. After an incident that occurred when I was a kid, she was the one who helped me through it most.
"Hey mum," I answer, bringing the phone to my ear.
"Hi, Amelie. How're you doing?" She replies, tone soft.
"Studying so not great." I say with a chuckle.
"Yes, I assumed. It's why I called, wanted to see how you were."
"Aw, thanks mom." I say, sincerity creeping into my tone. "How's work?"
"Don't remind me, if your grandfather gives me one more thing to do; I think I might kill him." She sighs.
"Oh, like you would ever, mum. I know you're a softie."
"Perhaps deep, deep down." She pauses. "But he might not live to see the soft part."
I gawk out a laugh and talk to her for a bit, catching up. I neglect the topic of Yuto, not wanting to mention him. In truth, he might be right. A part of me does want him, my heart accelerates when he's near and there's an indescribable pull to him. But I won't give into them, it's probably some spell he out on me using his magic cauldron.
"Ronan, for fu-" Mum is interrupted as I hear a bunch of shaking on the other line.
"Sorry, belle!" Dads voice creeps into the line. "Amelie, dear, hi!"
"Hey, dad." I reply.
"Stole the phone from your mother, I'm paying for that one later." I laugh at his words. "The things I do for you, my precious daughter."
"Your sacrifices are greatly appreciated." I say in a haughty tone which makes him chuckle.
"So, how you doing?" He asks, I can hear the plop of him sitting on the couch. "Exams making you want to rip your hair off?"
"Oh, yes."
"Poor thing." He tuts. "Been there, done that. It's shitty. You're visiting soon right? Remi's planning on coming and you will too, no negotiation."
"Yeah, I will." I chuckle as I speak. "I gotta finish studying, talk to you later dad. Say bye to mum for me."
"Will do, sweetie. Bye." He says before I hang up the phone and toss it on my bed.
When I was a kid, 6 years old, a couple of shit went down. I was actually a lot like my father before then, until after and I realized that to make it in this world; I had to be like my mother.
I learned some valuable information in that time, ones that I keep close to me. That day changed my life forever, and a part of me wonders how I'd be if it didn't happen. Would I be this bitter? Or would I be more carefree?
Just then, Ari barges into my room and begins jabbering about Remi. I shoot her a deadpan look which shuts her up.
She flops on my bed and frowns. "Homework is boring, let's go to a party! It's after the fight between Yuto and some guy from the Serpents!"
I groan internally at the mention of Yuto. It's like a switch has been flipped in my brain, and suddenly all the chaos from our earlier conversation comes rushing back. "Ari, I really can't. I need to study for this test. Plus, you know how crazy things get after the fights."
Ari rolls her eyes dramatically. "Oh, come on! Don't tell me you want to spend your Friday night holed up in your room with textbooks. You know Yuto's going to be there, right? Everyone will be."
My stomach twists a bit at her words, but I force a nonchalant expression. "What does it matter to me? I'm focusing on school right now, not...whatever crazy drama happens at those parties."
"Drama? Please. It's just people hanging out, having a good time. You'd have a blast!" Her enthusiasm is infectious, but I push back against it.
The truth is, I do want to go. I can almost imagine the noise, the music vibrating through the air, and the thrill of being around everyone, especially if Yuto is there.
"Yuto is just trouble," I say, a little more harshly than I intended. Ari raises an eyebrow, clearly not buying it.
"Nah, he's not trouble, he's exciting," she counters, her green eyes sparkling with mischief. "Besides, you're so hot in party clothes. You shouldn't waste it by hiding here."
"Okay, okay!" I say, exasperated but partially amused by her relentless spirit. "But I really do need to study. What time does it start?"
"Eight. You can study for a bit longer, and then we'll head over. Maybe you'll even change your mind." She hops off the bed, practically bouncing with energy. "Come on, what's the worst that could happen?"
Before I can respond, she's already out the door, her voice trailing behind her. I squint at my textbooks, the words blurring together as I weigh my options. A small voice in my head argues that missing out on fun now could lead to regrets later. Yet I can't shake the thought of the test looming over me.
With a reluctant sigh, I close my books and shove them under my bed. Just a little break, I tell myself. It's not going to hurt to just go and see what's happening for a little while.
I grab my phone and shoot a quick text to Ari: Fine, I'll go, but just for a bit. And I'm not drinking anything!
Moments later, she's back in my room, almost vibrating with excitement. "You won't regret it, I promise! We'll have the best time!"
I can't help but smile at her enthusiasm. Maybe just for tonight, I'll step out of my comfort zone. Maybe it'll be nice to see Yuto, to let the chaos of the evening wash over me, and to not think about how I could have been different or how life could have turned out. I've always been the responsible one, keeping my head down, and maybe—just maybe—it's time to embrace a little spontaneity.
"Okay, let's go," I say, adrenaline kicking in.
Ari shrieks and jumps up, and together we rush to get ready.
