Sophia’s footsteps echoed down the dimly lit hallway of her townhouse as she left Liam’s penthouse behind, her mind swirling with unanswered questions. Liam had given her just enough information to pull her deeper into the mystery, but she knew there was still so much more he wasn’t telling her.

The cool night air hit her face as she stepped outside, but it did little to clear the haze of uncertainty clouding her thoughts. Trusting Liam was dangerous, but not knowing the full extent of his involvement with Carmichael could be even worse.

Sliding into her car, Sophia gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white with tension. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A part of her feared it would be another cryptic message from an unknown number, but when she glanced at the screen, it was James.

James: “We need to talk. Now.”

Sophia sighed. She knew this conversation was coming. She had been keeping too much from him, and James had always been able to read her better than anyone. He wasn’t just her friend—he was her most trusted ally. And lately, she’d been pushing him away.

Sophia: “My place in 20?”

James’s response came immediately.

James: “Already on my way.”

Her heart sank. There was no avoiding the confrontation now. She started the engine and drove home, her mind replaying the events of the night. Liam’s warning, his connection to Carmichael, the hidden danger that lurked beneath every decision she made. Could she trust him at all? Or was he just another player in a game far more dangerous than she realized?

When Sophia arrived at her townhouse, James was already waiting. His car sat parked outside, his figure leaning against it, arms crossed. His expression was unreadable, but she could sense the frustration simmering beneath the surface.

Sophia stepped out of her car and walked toward him, her heart heavy. “Hey,” she said quietly.

James pushed off the car and met her gaze, his eyes intense. “We need to talk, Sophia. No more dodging. What the hell is going on?”

Sophia nodded, motioning for him to follow her inside. The tension between them was thick, neither of them speaking as they entered the living room. She took a seat on the couch, watching as James paced by the window.

“Look,” she began, her voice hesitant, “I know I haven’t been completely open with you lately. But it’s not because I don’t trust you.”

“Then why?” James’s tone was sharper than usual, and she could hear the hurt beneath his frustration. “I thought we were in this together. You can’t just shut me out when things get complicated.”

“I’m not shutting you out,” Sophia said, rubbing her temples. “I just... I didn’t want to put you in danger.”

James stopped pacing and turned to face her. “In danger? What kind of danger are we talking about here, Sophia? This isn’t just about business, is it?”

Sophia hesitated. How could she explain the tangled web she was caught in? The threats, the anonymous messages, Liam’s cryptic warnings, and Carmichael’s looming presence? It all felt like too much to put into words, but James deserved to know.

“Carmichael is involved,” she admitted softly. “I’ve been digging into his connections to my father’s business, and things are... more complicated than I expected.”

James’s brow furrowed. “Carmichael? Why didn’t you come to me the minute you found out? I could’ve helped.”

“I needed to be careful,” Sophia said, standing to meet his gaze. “If Carmichael knew I was looking into him, it could put everyone at risk. I didn’t want to drag you into something dangerous without knowing all the details.”

James stepped closer, his expression softening. “You don’t have to protect me, Sophia. We’ve been through worse together. I’m not just some bystander.”

Sophia’s heart ached at the truth in his words. James had been by her side through every challenge, every storm that had come their way. But this—this felt different. Darker. More insidious.

“I know,” she whispered, her voice breaking slightly. “But there’s more to this than I can explain right now. I’m still piecing it together.”

James frowned, but he didn’t press her. “Fine. But promise me you’ll stop doing this alone. Whatever you’re caught up in, we’ll figure it out together.”

Sophia managed a small smile, appreciating the strength in his words. “I promise. No more secrets.”

As they stood in the soft glow of the living room, the weight of their conversation began to ease. But just as Sophia started to feel the tension lift, her phone buzzed again. This time, the message was from an unknown number.

Unknown: “You’re running out of time. Meet me tomorrow night if you want the truth.”

Sophia’s blood ran cold. Another message. Another threat. She showed the text to James, her hands trembling slightly.

“Who’s that from?” James asked, his voice low.

“I don’t know,” Sophia admitted. “I’ve been getting these messages for days now. Someone knows I’m looking into Carmichael. And they’re getting impatient.”

James stared at the message, his jaw clenched. “You can’t go to this meeting alone.”

“I have to,” Sophia said, her resolve hardening. “Whoever this is, they know something about my father’s business—about the things he was involved in before he died. If I don’t go, I may never get the answers I need.”

“And if it’s a trap?” James asked, his voice tight with concern. “What if they’re luring you in to silence you?”

Sophia paused, the weight of his words pressing down on her. She had considered that possibility, but the pull to uncover the truth was too strong. She couldn’t walk away now, not when she was so close.

“I’ll be careful,” she promised. “But I can’t let fear stop me from finding out what really happened.”

James stared at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of worry and frustration. “Just... don’t do anything reckless, okay?”

Sophia nodded, grateful for his support. “I won’t.”

As James left the townhouse, Sophia’s mind raced. She knew tomorrow night could change everything. The shadows around her father’s empire were closing in, and the deeper she dug, the more dangerous it became.

But Sophia wasn’t one to back down.

She glanced at the clock. In 24 hours, she would either uncover the truth she had been searching for—or she would walk straight into a trap.
