Sophia stood in the warehouse long after Carmichael had left, his cryptic words echoing in her mind. You’ve inherited more than just your father’s fortune. You’ve inherited his position in this empire.

The chill in the air bit at her skin, but it was nothing compared to the icy fear seizing her heart. An empire. A secret network that controlled more than just money and power. The idea seemed impossible, like something out of a thriller novel, yet Carmichael had spoken with such certainty.

She didn’t want to believe him, but deep down, she knew that there had always been something about her father’s business dealings that didn’t add up. The veiled conversations, the strange meetings, the way people had always deferred to him with an almost unsettling reverence. She had always assumed it was just the nature of high finance. Now, she wasn’t so sure.

Sophia took a steadying breath, her mind racing. She had to get out of here, but where would she go? Running wouldn’t solve anything. She was in too deep now, trapped in a world she hadn’t even known existed until tonight.

As she made her way back to the car, her phone buzzed in her pocket. For a moment, her stomach tightened with dread. Another message from Carmichael? An unknown threat? But when she glanced at the screen, relief washed over her—it was James.

James: “Are you okay?”

Sophia let out a shaky breath, grateful for the brief reprieve from the chaos swirling around her. She hesitated for a moment before typing back.

Sophia: “I’m fine. Heading back now. We need to talk.”

She knew James would be waiting for her at her townhouse, and the thought of his steady presence calmed her, if only slightly. She needed to tell him everything—about Carmichael, about her father’s so-called empire, about the fact that she was now a pawn in a dangerous game that went far beyond anything she’d imagined.

As she drove back toward the city, Sophia’s mind continued to whirl. There had to be a way out of this, a way to protect herself without falling deeper into the tangled web her father had left behind. But every solution felt like it came with a price, and the more she thought about it, the more she realized that escaping wasn’t going to be simple. Not with Carmichael watching her every move.

When she finally pulled up to her townhouse, the familiar sight of James’s car parked out front brought a wave of comfort. He was already inside, sitting on the edge of the couch with a tense expression when she walked in. His gaze met hers immediately, and she could see the worry etched across his face.

“Did everything go okay?” he asked, standing as she entered the room. “You’ve been gone for hours.”

Sophia dropped her keys onto the counter, feeling the exhaustion weighing heavily on her. “You won’t believe what just happened,” she said, running a hand through her hair as she sat down.

James frowned, moving to sit beside her. “Try me.”

For a moment, Sophia wasn’t sure where to start. There was so much to explain, so much she still didn’t understand herself. But she needed to share it with someone—to get it out in the open before the weight of it crushed her.

“I met with Carmichael,” she began, her voice low.

James’s eyes widened in shock. “Carmichael? You met him? What the hell, Sophia, that’s dangerous. What did he want?”

Sophia sighed. “He wanted to warn me. About my father. About... everything.”

James was silent for a moment, his brow furrowing in confusion. “What do you mean?”
