Sophia's hands trembled as she watched James connect the device to one of the servers. The small black box was unassuming, but Derrick had assured them it was their key to Carmichael's vault-the one place that held every dirty secret he had buried. If they could install the backdoor without being detected, they'd have access to everything they needed to take him down.

"Okay, I'm in," Derrick's voice crackled through their earpieces. "The device is working. I'm starting the data upload now. You two just need to stay there for a few minutes while it works."

Sophia glanced nervously at the door. "How long is this going to take?"

"Ten minutes, tops," Derrick replied. "But you need to be on high alert. If anyone walks in, you'll need to act fast."

James nodded, his eyes glued to the device as it blinked to life. "Got it. We'll stand guard."

Sophia's pulse raced, every second feeling like an eternity as she stood next to James in the small server room. The sound of the party beyond the door seemed muffled, but it was a constant reminder that they were deep in enemy territory. Carmichael's men were out there, mingling among the guests, unaware of what was happening just a few doors away. For now.

"Don't worry," James said softly, his voice cutting through the tension. "We've come this far. We're not turning back now."

Sophia nodded, but her heart was pounding in her chest. She'd never felt this exposed before-this vulnerable. Any minute, someone could walk through that door, and everything would fall apart.

Suddenly, Derrick's voice came through their earpieces again, his tone more urgent this time. "You've got company. One of Carmichael's men is heading your way."

Sophia's heart dropped. "How much time do we have?"

"Not much," Derrick replied. "He's moving fast. You need to hide or make this look good. Now."

James's eyes widened as he quickly scanned the room. "We don't have anywhere to hide."

Sophia's mind raced as she glanced at the server racks and the limited space around them. There was no way they could conceal themselves in time.

"Wait," she whispered, an idea forming in her mind. She grabbed James's arm, pulling him close to her.

James looked confused. "What are you-"

"Trust me," Sophia said, cutting him off. She pressed herself against him, her hands sliding up to his shoulders as she leaned in close. "We're just another couple sneaking away from the party."

James's eyes flickered with understanding as he quickly played along, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close. They stood pressed against the wall, their bodies entangled as if they were in the middle of an intimate moment. Sophia's heart pounded, but this time for an entirely different reason. She could feel James's breath against her neck, his touch sending shivers down her spine despite the dangerous situation.

Just as they settled into their cover, the door creaked open.

Sophia's pulse raced as she heard footsteps entering the room. She tightened her grip on James, praying that their act would be convincing enough to avoid suspicion.

"Excuse me," a deep voice said from behind them, sounding both amused and annoyed.

Sophia turned her head slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of the man standing in the doorway. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, his expression one of irritation as he realized what they were doing.

James let out an exaggerated sigh and turned to face the man, still holding Sophia close. "Sorry about that. We just needed a little privacy."

The man's eyes narrowed, clearly not buying it entirely. "This area is off-limits to guests."

Sophia's heart raced as she forced herself to smile, tilting her head slightly to look up at the man. "We didn't mean any harm. It's just... it's a bit crowded out there, you know?"

The man's expression softened slightly, though his suspicion hadn't completely faded. "I suggest you return to the main event. Now."

James nodded, loosening his grip on Sophia and stepping away. "Of course. We'll leave right away."

The man stared at them for a moment longer before giving a curt nod. "Make sure you do."

Sophia felt her legs trembling as she followed James out of the room, the man's eyes burning into her back as they made their way down the hallway. She forced herself to walk calmly, even though every instinct was screaming at her to run. It wasn't until they were out of sight that she let out the breath she had been holding.

"That was too close," she whispered, glancing at James.

James nodded, his jaw clenched. "But it worked."

"Barely," Sophia muttered, her pulse still racing from the close call.

In her earpiece, Derrick's voice came through again. "Nice work, you two. That was smooth. The device is still working-give it a few more minutes."

Sophia leaned against the wall, trying to calm her breathing. They had narrowly avoided disaster, but they weren't out of the woods yet. The device still needed time, and there was no telling if someone else would come looking for them.

James glanced around the corner, checking to make sure the coast was clear. "We can't stay here. We need to blend back into the party for a bit."

Sophia nodded, following him as they made their way back toward the ballroom. The noise of the gala washed over them as they re-entered the lavish event, the sound of laughter and clinking glasses a sharp contrast to the tension that still lingered in the air.

They slipped back into the crowd, trying to appear as if nothing had happened. Sophia felt her heart pounding in her chest, but she forced herself to smile and engage in small talk with the guests around them. Every second felt like an eternity as they waited for Derrick to finish his work.

"Everything's still running smoothly," Derrick said after a few more minutes. "You're almost done. Just hang tight."

Sophia nodded subtly, pretending to laugh at something one of the guests said. She could feel the pressure building, the sense that they were playing with fire and could be burned at any moment.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw him.

Carmichael.

He had entered the ballroom, his presence commanding the attention of everyone around him. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, his cold, calculating eyes scanned the crowd as he made his way through the room. People parted for him like the Red Sea, offering polite nods and greetings as he passed.

Sophia's heart stopped as his gaze swept past her. For a brief moment, she thought he had seen her-recognized her. But he continued walking, oblivious to the fact that the two people who were working to destroy him were standing just a few feet away.

"Stay calm," James whispered, his hand brushing against hers. "He doesn't know."

Sophia swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay composed. But the sight of Carmichael was a stark reminder of the danger they were in. If he realized what they were up to, if he found out they had compromised his system...

"We're almost there," Derrick's voice came through again. "Just a little longer."

Sophia nodded slightly, her eyes darting back to Carmichael. He was engaged in conversation with a group of wealthy businessmen, his smile charming but his eyes cold. She wondered how many of the people in this room knew who he really was-how many of them were complicit in the corruption that had allowed him to rise to power.

"Alright," Derrick said finally, his voice filled with relief. "It's done. The backdoor is in place. You're clear."

Sophia exhaled, the tension in her body easing just a little. They had done it. They had planted the backdoor, and now they had access to Carmichael's vault. The next step would be extracting the data and exposing him once and for all.

But as Sophia glanced back at Carmichael, a chill ran down her spine.

This wasn't over.

Not by a long shot...
