July 2024
It had almost been two years since his retirement from Formula 1 and Seb kept himself busy with various activities. He could take the BioBienenApfel project more seriously, then he became the co-owner of Germany SailGP Team, and he also became an investor to a sports and endurance drink brand, Perple. He was really enjoying his life away from the limelight.
And of course, the kids kept him occupied. Since he was married to Jacqie back in February 2013, they were blessed with two daughters and a son. The firstborn, Freya was born in January 2014, then the secondborn, Carina in September 2015, and the youngest, Hänsel in November 2019.
As both Freya and Carina started their summer school holiday, Seb planned to bring his wife and kids to have vacation in some countries in the Nordic Regions, which were Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. And as usual, he would drive his van instead of flying by plane.
Jacqie was packing Hänsel's stuff in his bedroom when Seb entered. Their kids were playing inside Freya and Carina's room, so he felt that it was the right time for him to reveal something that had been in his thought since a couple of days ago to his wife.
"Schatz."
Jacqie glanced at him and smiled. "Hi."
"Can you spare a few minutes? I need to tell you something."
"Oh, sure." She closed the small suitcase before sitting down on the bed. He also took his seat next to her. "Is there something important, Seb?"
"You know that we are going to Norway, right?"
"Yes, I do."
"At the end of this month, there's a mountain bike race that I want to compete in."
"Oh," she nodded. She always knew that he loved riding a bike, but competing in a bike race would be a new experience for him. "When is that?"
"On the 27th, in Alta. I'm going to compete in the lowest category, which covers a distance of 150 kilometers."
Jacqie was actually happy that there were a lot of things Seb could do after stepping back from F1, although she couldn't lie that she missed watching him race. But she shouldn't be selfish. She understood that he very much needed the free time he finally had.
"So, have you registered?"
"That's the problem."
She frowned. "Are you having difficulty?"
"No. It's just that..." he was silent for a moment before chuckling. "Can I take your surname?"
"What?!"
Her reaction made him laugh harder. "Yeah, I want to... 'borrow' your surname if that's fine."
"And why is that?"
He took a deep breath before explaining to her. "Jacqie, I hope that this makes sense to you. I will take part in the competition at the same time as our family vacation. You and the kids will surely be there as well. If I registered with my own name and the organiser spread the news, then the big media would probably come to cover my activity there and... what if they secretly exposed our kids? You know that how private I am. But if I used a fake name, they probably wouldn't know, not until the D day or until I finished the race."
