The atmosphere in our classroom was thick with an unspoken anticipation, as if the very air was alive with secrets and promises, waiting for the right moment to unfold. It was a seemingly ordinary Monday at Sint-Aloysius College in Menen, where our school day was progressing as usual. We had just completed our second hour of lessons, and the prospect of our upcoming break was a welcome distraction from the routine. We were eager to step out onto the playground and enjoy some fresh air, a brief respite from the confines of the classroom.
As we began to gather our things and head towards the door, a sudden crackle erupted from the loudspeaker mounted in the corner of the room. The sharp, jarring noise cut through the ambient hum of chatter, commanding our immediate attention. The announcement that followed was like a bolt from the blue, shattering the silence and setting off a wave of murmurs and excited speculation:
"Attention all fourth-year students: Please proceed immediately to the auditorium. Important information regarding the trip to Paris this Thursday and Friday will be provided."
A ripple of excitement spread through the room as Max, Peter, James, and I, along with the rest of our fourth-grade classmates, hurriedly made our way to the auditorium. The corridor was a flurry of movement and chatter as we navigated through the throngs of students, each of us buzzing with curiosity about what the meeting would entail. When we entered the auditorium, the atmosphere was a mix of formality and anticipation. The director and several teachers were already on stage, their presence adding a sense of gravitas to the occasion.
Once everyone had settled into their seats, the director stepped forward and took the microphone. Her voice, though authoritative, carried an undertone of warmth and clarity that commanded our full attention. The room fell into a hushed silence as she began to speak.
"Before we proceed with the division of groups, there are several important rules that we need to discuss. Any violation of these rules will result in serious consequences. First and foremost, the use of alcohol, drugs, or any other prohibited substances is strictly forbidden. Anyone who returns to Menen under the influence will be sent home immediately. Additionally, you will face a two-week suspension, during which you will be assigned tasks for each subject. These tasks must be completed in full upon your return, and you will need to report to the secretariat for further instructions."
The seriousness of the director's words was palpable, and Max, seated next to me, leaned in to share a whispered comment with James and me. A playful grin spread across his face as he spoke. "I bet one of Ollie's gang will end up drunk."
"Have you seen them at parties? It's practically a guarantee," I whispered back, sharing in his amusement.
James chuckled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Who knows, they might even be high and drunk at the same time."
The director continued, undeterred by our side conversations. "You will remain with the same group throughout the trip, and you are only allowed to leave your group when specifically authorized by the teachers. While on the bus, you may choose whom to sit with, but if you are not with your assigned group, it will be your responsibility to ensure you adhere to the rules."
Mr. William then took over the microphone, preparing to explain the process for dividing us into groups. "The groups will be organized based on the alphabetical order of your first names. However, this does not mean that everyone with the same initial will be grouped together. Instead, you will have the option to choose between two destinations: the Opéra Garnier or Versailles. Due to limited availability at Versailles, you will need to vote on your preJohnnyd destination."
Mr. Benjamin added, "In a few moments, you will find out which group you are in and which destination you will be visiting."
A murmur of excitement and anxiety filled the room as the groups were announced. Some students cheered at the results, while others displayed their disappointment. Max quickly turned to share his excitement. "Yes, we're with Olivia and Liam. It's going to be an amazing couple of days."
