The shrill sound of the alarm pierced through the tranquil early morning silence. It was four o'clock, an hour when most people are still nestled comfortably in their beds. James and I, however, were wide awake and already in a rush. Our excitement for the day ahead overshadowed our sleepiness as we scrambled to get ready. The urgency of our movements almost led us to tumble down the stairs as we hurriedly made our way from the second floor to the kitchen below.
In the dimly lit kitchen, the scene was almost comical. James's parents were already awake and bustling around, their presence a stark contrast to the serene stillness of the early morning. James's younger sister, however, was still fast asleep, her peaceful slumber undisturbed by the early hour.
"Who do we have here? Someone's up before the crack of dawn and hasn't even bothered with pajamas. And our sleeping beauty is still catching some Z's," James's mother quipped with a teasing tone, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
In our hurried state, I hadn't even realized that I was still wearing the blue sweater James had lent me the previous day. James, on the other hand, was clad in nothing but his underwear, the stark contrast between our disheveled appearances and the more put-together image of James's parents making the situation even more amusing. We sat down at the kitchen table, our disarray a stark contrast to the calm morning routine of James's family.
As we ate our breakfast in near silence, the gravity of the day began to settle in. The excitement of the upcoming trip to Paris was palpable, but so was the necessity of getting ready and heading out. After breakfast, we hurried upstairs to change into our travel outfits and prepare for our departure to school.
"You can keep the jersey on," James said with a grin, his eyes sparkling with playful mischief. "It looks better on you than it does on me."
"Alright, I'll wear it for the rest of today and tomorrow," I replied, a sense of pride in my voice as I wore the sweater.
We exchanged amused looks and continued to get dressed, our laughter filling the room and easing the morning's chaos. By the time we were finished, James's parents were already waiting for us in the car. We quickly gathered our luggage and climbed into the vehicle, our anticipation growing with every passing moment.
The drive to school was filled with eager chatter and excitement. James's father, ever the conversationalist, turned to us as we stopped at a traffic light. "So, are you excited? Off to Paris, the city of romance, the lights..."
"Absolutely!" I responded, unable to hide my enthusiasm. "It's a great escape from school."
"And we get to enjoy life and see some historic buildings," I added, my thoughts racing with the possibilities of the day ahead.
The fifteen-minute drive to school seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. As we pulled into the parking lot, it was clear that we were not the only ones eager for the trip. The parking lot was bustling with students and teachers, all eager to start their journey. We unloaded our luggage and made our way to Max and Liam, who were waiting under a large tree near the entrance.
"Good morning, guys," Liam greeted us with a cheerful wave.
"Shh, it's way too early for this," I grumbled, leaning my head against James's shoulder in a display of sleepy frustration.
"Someone's in a grumpy mood this morning," Max observed with a smirk.
"Leave him alone, he hasn't had enough sleep," James said, his arm resting casually around me. "But he'll catch up on sleep on the bus, right?" I nodded in agreement.
Just then, an announcement came over the loudspeaker. "Please gather at the buses. We will count you as you board."
James, Max, Liam, and I climbed aboard the bus, taking our places with Max and Liam positioned in front of us. Within ten minutes, we were on our way. The journey was expected to take about two to three hours, and as the bus rumbled along, the excitement for the trip grew.
