Max was the first to step out of the house, his anticipation for the evening's adventure palpable. I quickly grabbed my cell phone, a crucial precaution in case anyone tried to reach me. With a swift click, I closed the door behind me and headed downstairs, eager to catch up with the others. Max had already joined the rest of our group outside, and I could see them milling about, their excitement evident.
Emma, sprawled comfortably on the couch in the living room, glanced up from her book. "Where are you guys headed?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
"We're just going out for a bit. You know, hanging out in the city," I replied casually, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
Emma's expression turned thoughtful. "Don't stay out too late. Mom and Dad said we need to be back by nine o'clock. We still have dinner with the family to look forward to."
I nodded in acknowledgment. "Got it. We'll be back before then." With a final wave, I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
The rest of the group was already on their bikes, ready to roll. I made my way over to James, who was adjusting his bike's handlebars. "We have to be back by nine o'clock," I informed him as I climbed onto the back of his bike. Since I didn't have my own bicycle, I was grateful for the ride.
"Got it," James confirmed, a determined nod accompanying his words. "Where should we head first?" he asked, glancing at the group.
"How about we hit Starbucks first and then chill in the park afterward?" Olivia suggested, her enthusiasm infectious.
Everyone agreed with Olivia's plan, and we set off towards Starbucks, a local store we frequented for snacks and supplies. Upon arrival, we locked our bikes and made our way inside.
"What do you want?" James asked as he scanned the candy and snack aisles.
"I'm not entirely sure yet," I replied, contemplating the myriad of choices. "Maybe I'll grab some Pringles and a box of Caprisun."
James chuckled. "You do realize you'll have to carry that yourself, right?"
"So what?" I shot back playfully. "At least I'm contributing with both drinks and snacks."
"I'm going to check on Olivia," I said, deciding to leave James to his snack selections.
"Alright, I'll be here if you need me," James called after me as I walked away.
I headed towards Olivia, intending to discuss Max's presence with her. As I approached the line where I had last seen her, I accidentally bumped into Liam.
"Sorry about that," I said, quickly regaining my balance.
"It's fine," Liam replied tersely. "But you're not supposed to be in this line."
"Why not?" I asked, slightly taken aback. I pushed past him, curiosity getting the better of me. As I peered around the corner, I immediately turned back with a mix of shock and anger. "I knew it!"
"Don't shout like that," Liam admonished, his tone carrying an edge of frustration.
"How long has this been going on?" I demanded, my voice a mix of hurt and confusion.
Liam hesitated before finally responding. "For about a week."
"WHAT?!" I exclaimed, my voice echoing throughout the store, drawing the attention of several nearby shoppers.
"I didn't mean for you to shout," Liam said, his voice low but firm.
Olivia and Max arrived at that moment, their expressions concerned. "Is something wrong?" Max asked, his gaze shifting between us.
