I found myself trapped in the darkest corner of my mind, a familiar refuge from the harsh reality. My life was a nightmare, but I had mastered the art of escapism. I hallucinated a fairytale existence, convincing myself that I was happy – or, at the very least, "acting" happy.
High school had been a never-ending torment, but its conclusion brought no solace. College loomed ahead, a daunting obstacle that filled me with dread.
As a perpetual side character, I felt suffocated by the weight of others' expectations. Always helping, always supporting, never living my own life.
Today marked the beginning of this new chapter. My heart racing, I stepped onto the college campus, feeling like a small boat adrift in a stormy sea.
I had no friends, no allies, and no desire to be here.
As I walked, my heart thudded against my chest like a frantic drumbeat.
That's when I saw him – Killian.
Our paths collided, literally.
His piercing gaze pinned me in place, and I felt the air escape my lungs.
"Watch where you're going," he growled, his voice low and menacing.
But then, his expression softened, and he whispered, "You're cute, so for fuck's sake, I won't hurt you."
My face burned with embarrassment.
How did I respond to this?
Why was I blushing?
Killian's gaze lingered, and I felt exposed.
He chuckled, a low, husky sound, and sauntered away.
I hoped our paths would never cross again.
Yet, a part of me mourned the loss of his majestic presence.
Determined to shake off the encounter, I focused on my mission: making a friend.
Being a loner wouldn't survive in this vast, overwhelming college.
That's when Sam appeared, materializing out of nowhere.
"Hey, mind if I sit here?" he asked, his warm smile a balm to my frazzled nerves.
We talked, and our connection was instant.
Sam was charming, handsome, and kind.
But his fascination with my Asian heritage left me perplexed.
"First Asian friend, and I'm not disappointed," he said, his eyes sparkling.
I laughed, feeling a sense of belonging.
Maybe, just maybe, this college wouldn't be so bad.
That's when I saw him again – Killian.
He strode into the classroom, his ocean-like eyes locking onto mine.
My heart sank.
This was not going to be a good day.
Killian's gaze held me captive, and I felt the room spin around me.
Sam's concerned voice broke the spell.
"Hey, you okay?"
I nodded, forcing a smile.
But Killian's presence had awoken a storm within me.
