As the war dragged on, their bond only grew stronger. They fought side by side, never straying far from each other's side in battle. Each time they walked into the fray; it was with the knowledge that they might not walk out again—but that knowledge only made their moments of peace all the more precious.
In the midst of battle, amidst curses and hexes, Moony would always glance over to make sure Padfoot was still there, still fighting. And each time their eyes met; it was like a silent promise: "I'm still here. I'm still with you."
One night, after an intense skirmish with Death Eaters that left them both battered and bloodied, they collapsed together on the floor of their flat, too exhausted to make it to the bed. Padfoot groaned as he lay back, wincing at the pain in his ribs. "Merlin, we need a holiday," he muttered, a weak grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Moony laughed softly, though it was laced with exhaustion. "I don't think the war comes with vacation days," he quipped, lying beside him, his head resting on Padfoot's chest.
They lay in silence for a while, the only sound the steady rise and fall of their breathing, the warmth of their bodies a comforting presence in the cold, dangerous world they lived in. Eventually, Padfoot spoke again, his voice quieter this time. "Do you think... when this is all over... do you think we'll ever get to just... live? Without looking over our shoulders, without worrying about what's coming next?"
Moony closed his eyes, letting Padfoot's words settle over him. "I hope so," he said quietly. "I want to believe that there's a world waiting for us on the other side of this. A world where we don't have to hide or fight anymore."
Padfoot was silent for a moment, and then he turned slightly, his arm coming around Moony's shoulders to pull him closer. "We'll make that world," he whispered. "For us. For everyone we care about. We'll make it happen."
Moony smiled against Padfoot's chest, letting the warmth of his words fill the hollow spaces inside him. "I love you," he murmured, the words coming easily now after years of keeping them buried.
Padfoot's grip tightened slightly, his voicebarely above a whisper. "I love you too, Moony. Always."
