Remus Lupin sat bolt upright in bed, his heart racing. The moon outside his window cast a cold, silver light on the drapes. He'd had the dream again. The same dream that had been plaguing him for the past week. In it, Sirius Black, his best friend since childhood, was not the reckless, grinning prankster he knew, but a shadowy figure with eyes that pierced his soul. Each night, the dream grew more vivid, more intense, leaving Remus feeling anxious and out of place. He rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the lingering images. It was just a dream, he told himself. Just a dream.
But why did it feel so real? Why did it feel like a warning?
Remus swung his legs over the side of the bed, placing his bare feet on the cold wooden floor. The chill seemed to anchor him to reality, but his chest remained tight, his mind still entangled in the remnants of the dream. His thoughts spiralled, questions colliding with memories. He hadn't spoken to Sirius in days. Their last conversation had been tense, weighed down by things left unsaid. It wasn't like them. They had always shared everything— laughter, pain, secrets too dark to confide in anyone else. But now? Now there was distance.
He pressed his hands to his temples. "It's just the moon coming," he whispered to the empty room, as though saying it out loud would banish the uneasy feeling. Yet deep down, Remus knew it wasn't the moon. It wasn't the pull of the wolf inside him, growing stronger as the days slipped toward the full. This was something different, something darker. He could feel it in his bones.
Meanwhile, Sirius Black awoke with a gasp. His heart pounded in his chest; his breathing laboured as if he had run for miles. He sat upright in bed, the sheets tangled around his legs, damp with sweat. He knew immediately— without even having to search for the memory—what had shaken him awake. The same dream. The same haunted eyes staring back at him. Remus.
Sirius ran a hand through his messy hair, his fingers trembling slightly as he tried to steady his breathing. It was ridiculous, wasn't it? It was just a dream. A stupid, recurring dream. And yet... it wasn't just a dream. It felt like more. The images clung to him, the weight of them settling heavily on his chest. His mind refused to shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong, that the dream wasn't just a product of his subconscious, but something more ominous.
He swung his legs off the bed and went to the common room, pacing by the fireplace in an attempt to shake off the sense of unease crawling under his skin. It wasn't just the dream. Lately, he had felt off, out of sync with everything and everyone, especially Remus. They hadn't spoken properly in days, which was strange in itself. Sirius and Remus had always been able to talk, even when things were hard. But now, there was a wall between them, invisible but impenetrable.
He couldn't help but wonder if Remus was having the same dream. That thought made Sirius stop in his tracks, the cold air biting at his skin. What if Remus had seen the same thing, felt the same thing? Could they both be imagining it? Or was something darker at play? His heart skipped a beat, a flicker of fear tightening in his gut.
